Most families bond over shared videogame experiences. In Italy, one family got into a knife fight over them. An Italian teenager stabbed his father in the neck with a 15-inch blade after the two got into an argument over the best strategies to utilize in FIFA 2009.
46-year-old Fabrizio tried to offer 16-year-old Mario some tactical advice for the soccer game, but Mario became petulant and the father decided to switch off the television. This action crossed a line with Mario, who retrieved a knife from the kitchen, stabbed his father in the neck, and then proceeded to clean the knife in front of his mother.
The mother didn't know why Mario was cleaning the knife until Fabrizio staggered bleeding into the kitchen. One can imagine she was relatively surprised. After the attack, Mario shut himself in his room and waited for police, who arrested him without incident.
"We bought him FIFA 2009 because we didn’t want him playing violent games," explains the mother.
Well, I think this pretty much makes it clear that whether or not the game itself is violent doesn't matter. If you're mental enough to stab people in their necks with kitchen knives, it doesn't matter what you're playing. Of course, I fully expect the tabloids to conveniently ignore the fact that this was a sports game and then wait for the next GTA "inspired" crime.

WTF
I'd agree with you were it not for the fact that reading into this a bit more his parents seem relatively responsible (of course God knows what goes on behind closed doors, that's speculation) - they don't allow him to watch violent films or play violent videogames. So the desensitisation argument doesn't come in here, the kid's just nutso.
Similar stories that will be ignored:
- Terrorist attacks not performed by Muslim fundamentalists.
- Money raised for earthquake victims that don't involve cute children.
- A story involving relationships, petty crime or a non-fatal health issue that doesn't involve a celebrity or public figure.
- Diseases that can't be hyped up as epidemics or public health failures.
BUT any kind of deranged violent act, be it murder or GBH from playing ANY sort of videogame is wrong, I must agree...
also, yay italy
Football games has no violence, only faults and red cards..if his dad and him were playing on a Versus and the dad kicked his ass out with goals he would sure get mad and maybe do the knife thing, but FUCK DAMMIT,BAN THIS SICK FILTH!!!
I though he would grab a winged hat and fly away.....aww...
Not-so Super Mario.
I think this should be classified in the same category as hooligan riots, which mean DUMB FUCKS WITHOUT SELF-CONTROL DOING STUPID SHIT IN THE NAME OF A TEAM! It's not fair! This is going to get blamed on videogames, not on the kid, the government will be all durr-hurr vidjagaems=satan, and us normal people will suffer.
Don't blame it on Football, Videogames, or anything that isn't related to the kid being a sick fuck.
