Usually these "kid acts like a brat over videogames" stories are stupid, but this one is simply disturbing. 17-year-old Daniel Petric is on trial for the murder of his mother and attempted murder of his father, where it is alleged he shot them both in the head because they wouldn't let him play Halo 3.
Mark and Susan Petric would not let their then-16-year-old-son buy Halo 3, something he went and did anyway, before getting caught. The game was confiscated and locked away with a 9mm handgun. On October 20th, 2007, Daniel entered his parents' bedroom and said to them: "Would you guys close your eyes? I have a surprise for you."
Daniel shot his mother in the head, killing her instantly. The father was also shot, but survived thanks to his daughter and her husband arriving with plans to watch a Cleveland Indians game.
"Dad, I'm so sorry for what I did to Mom, to you and to the family," Daniel has been quoted as saying to Mark. "I'm so glad you are alive."
To which the father responded: "You're my son. You're my boy."
Daniel's lawyers are attempting to explain his violent attack on a snowboarding accident, suggesting that the stress and the inability to do anything other than watch TV and play videogames led to the murder.
Just an incredibly twisted story altogether.
...I... uh... I honestly have no response to that.
Did... did you just read the story wrong or something? Becuase... I really can't imagine that anybody would think the parents deserved that.
Unless you're talking about the kid... that makes a bit more sense.
Really, though, this story is pure 'What the hell?'
It's just messed up.
Wow.
That screams mental problems. If the kid really said that to his parents before shooting them, he's got some sort of messed up shit going on in there.
Condolences to the family and the kid. I hope there's some way to...I don't even know. Just...wow.
Of course this looks good on the video gaming front /sarcasm - at least his parents did some parenting, albeit at a dire cost.
or the Halo 2 handgun
What an ass hat of a kid.
I feel a bit sick, that's for sure.
The world and it's people are not perfect, and I think this proves it.
"Dad I just shot your wife in the face and killed her. I'm sorry."
"Its k"
And the fact that his father can just forgive him like that? Well that just amazes and baffles me.
The logic is rather questionable, isn't it?
Fixed.
I hope this kid gets some help, but he should still be locked away for a long long time.
also fuck man.. fuck...
They really should investigate the possible correlation between having a gun and shooting someone. That would probably show some kind of link between the two.
Another fun test would be to find families that have good parents and good balanced kids, make them play the heck out of all the greatest murder simulators and raping games to finally give those kids a couple of guns & lots of bullets and check on them over the course of a few years to see if any of them end up having "accidents".
But yeah, this is pretty sad and this kid needs more a serious mental than cold hard prison. Maybe it's because I'm Canadian that I am less vengeful than most of you.
I of course meant that in a symbolic sort of way, where humanity fails .___.
He was almost old enough to buy it on his own too. It's a damn shame.
He did buy it. The whole "must be 17 to buy M games" is not even a law, it is just a practice most retailers follow. ESRB is a guideline, not a law. Parents who would not let a 16 year old play a "M" game need to get their brain examined. Halo never killed a man, only guns and people have.
I'm sorry. I keep thinking of Daniel Day Lewis.
have a milkshake.
his name is Daniel. I can't help it.
