Tecmo Koei wants fresh IP in Europe photo

The merger between Tecmo and Koei brought about one interesting new development that I hadn't been expecting -- a fresh and rather large interest in Europe. The newly formed Tecmo Koei Europe is looking to become a powerful force in the PAL territories, and key to its victory will be the development of fresh IP.

"The European video game market is expanding very rapidly, while Japan has stood still," says Tecmo Koei CEO Kenji Matsubara. "Our European business is not so big at the moment, but we see many opportunities for us to expand the business, and this is why we’ve created Tecmo Koei Europe. With this office we want to establish a major brand image and also major publisher status throughout Europe.

"To do this we need titles. We already have some big brand games like Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive and Dynasty Warriors, but to be a major player in Europe we need new intellectual properties. So we will release new IP for Western audiences and reinforce our existing brand titles in the region. That is our strategy."

Best of luck them, I say. A publisher focusing on Europe is a rare and beautiful thing, despite how much the territory is growing. Hopefully such a focus will pay off.

[Thanks, Andreas]

If you want the Western market, you use muscles, guns and explosions.
If you want the Japanese market, you use anime, big boobs(also works on western market) and the same old shit.
And what do you do if you want the European market?

maybe if they just made a really good game.

man, i have the same issue with koei as i do with from software (armored core).. amazing game concepts-- shit i want to like; but either due to budget or just horrible developers (probably both), the games are so fucking fail, even after dozens of sequels AND there's no competition.

where the fuck are my mecha games at?

This only means that they will focus only in the UK, France and Germany.
And I know it for a fact.
In the past 4 to 5 years I haven't seen an Dynasty Warriors game on a Sony console at all, not even once.
I suspect the only reason I got hold of Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires for the 360 was under the premise that "it's only some sort a 360 game" by the distributor.
When they say their new IPs need to be has big has DW, NG and DOA. I read "We have new IPs that we need to equally fail"

Ooops !!! the "equally fail" refers to commercial success of not quality of the games.
On a an unrelated note: Where's Project Zero IV ?

They have some amazing titles already.
Ninja Gaiden is good.
Dead or Alive is awesome.
Dynasty Warriors is ok.
However they do have a new IP and a sequel coming out very soon that are AAA that everyone must get.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (PS3 Only) & Quantum Theory (PS3 Only).

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (Fall 2009)

Quantum Theory (2010)

The best thing they can do right now is explore a bit.

What like Bladestorm which they already made and failed to advertise at all? I think they mean a quality fresh IP? :D (seriously though I liked Bladestorm but it was lacking).

This is good news, and I'm glad TK agree that something more is needed. No matter how much Jimbo likes DW games, that series doesn't get the kind attention other fresh new concept games do, because its an over used IP and concept that has barely changed over the years.

I'd like for TK to become something great in the game industry, but in order to make a real impact, they need some cool new IP to help them. The Tecmo side will bring more original talent and Quantum Theory looks cool.

Perhaps they should think about doing some XBLA games, to which takes less risk. Think about what works in the west and build on that.
