When we learned that Swedish developer GRIN was working on a Final Fantasy game for Square-Enix, we were a little surprised to say the least. The game, codenamed Fortress, was rumored to be set in the world of Final Fantasy XII, but unfortunately GRIN went under and the game disappeared. However, word crept up that Square Enix still had the game in development, possibly at Eidos Montreal.
All caught up now? Good. So, the video above is supposedly a tech demo for the game. The poster of the video says that the game is still being made, but is not sure where. There's not too much here to get excited about as everything is clearly very early on, but if it is real video then the rumors of the game still being in development are most likely true.
I don't want to get anyone too excited, but there is a Chocobo in this video. It runs.

Meet the rest of the team
News on this one comes and goes, but I'd love to see it happen. I like the world of Invalice a bit more than most other FF games for its more cerebral, politically motivated characters
The environments look pretty nice, but there wasn't much else to pick up on.
The graphics if this is extreme early would obviously not be great/final - considering this could be a dynasty warriorish game individually impressive graphics is unlikely.
This actually looks really good. The guy seemed to be firing arrows in real-time, none of that targeting and selecting menus bullshit. I also liked Bionic Commando, even though I hated the main character lolz.
Bakasama: XII had it's positive sides, and I like that SE tries something new with the series (even though FFX will remain my all-time favorite). But XII had it's flaws as well. What I hated is that every little encounter slowed you down, normally while backtracking a FF game you can just breeze through it, but in XII the encounters level up with you, making the first monsters as hard/annoying in lvl 30 as lvl 1. basically.
With enough work it could be something great. It's actually pretty well for a tech demo. Actually tech demo might be the wrong word..more like pre-pre-alpha...and yet it still kept my attention.
I really liked Bionic Commando, so GRIN's passing made me rather sad. That tech demo does look like the Diesel engine - the shadows of the trees appear to be done in the same way as they were in Bionic Commando. If this is still under development, I wonder who picked up the pieces.
This is what FF should be like... The Demon's Souls feel is great. You get the sense that there's actually something to explore here. And yet we get XIII =(
I have never played Demon Souls but it does keep popping up. But I do agree with you, this is what XIII should have been like. It would have been soooo coool. In its current Tech Demo state it doesn't live and breathe FF enough for me yet but I'm sure that would change.
The monsters don't level up with you in FFXII. Are you high or something? FFVIII is the only FF game that does that. Don't go around spewing complete lies.
FFXII's flaws lie on in a few mechanics, most obviously the queue on spell casting due to processing of graphics limitations. Summons also could have been beefier and quickenings could have used some lore explanations along with summons having more story relevance.
I would love to see this happen. I know many FF fans did not like XII, however I seemed to enjoy it! I am not saying that XII takes my top spot for a FF game, but I don't believe it was as horrible as everyone made it out to be. I believe I put, at least, 120 hours into XII and would love to see this become something.
Thank f'ing god this got canned. That footage looks weak, Grin clearly has no feel for the art style ("realistic" does not suit the FF world), and quite frankly, after their horrible brutalizing of Bionic Commando, I'm glad they didn't get the chance to soil another great franchise. Though I almost wish that BC had been canned instead of this one - FF could have survived a poor game entry (Mystic Quest, anyone?) BC will likely never see the light of day again.

I don't think so since it was announced dead just like year.
I know it's a tech demo but I don't see anything too awe inspiring. And an FFXII-2 just makes it sound more unappealing.
whenever I see FF and II in the same sentence, I blank out and think it's 7 and automatically get an erection.
Did you even play 12? I mean... the Gambit system was designed so you didn't have to menu fight. Or select targets, for that matter.
Of course every thread everywhere about 12 is just full of complaining about Vaan or "Oh no this system is slightly different it hurts me"

At least their arn't any menus, menu battle system hurt my fingers.
