Team Ninja takes a mild crap on Street Fighter IV 3D photo

It's been a while since I've seen an honest to goodness fighting game rivalry. There was the faux trash talk between the Tekken 6 and Street Fighter IV devs from late last year, but that was all just to promote Street Fighter X Tekken. I don't think I've seen fighting game devs really talk smack about each other's game since the Eternal Champions/Mortal Kombat II/Street Fighter II days.

Maybe it's the nostalgia talking, but I'm happy to see the genuine return of fighting game developers dogging each others games. It's far from bloodthirsty, but to hear Team Ninja's Yosuke Hayashi say...

"(Street Fighter is) originally and now a 2D fighting game. But, for us, Dead or Alive is a 3D fighting game - so [Capcom has] a limitation with Street Fighter. As a 3D fighting game we have a lot of possibility, and it is natural to convey it to 3DS... (Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition) has a figurine battle. We are in the fighting game genre, and they're not fighting!"

... still has me smiling. I wonder if he thinks that statements like that will actually convince some people to buy Dead or Alive Dimensions over Super Street Fighter IV 3D?

Are you convinced?

Mr.Holmes It seems as history is repeating it self o___O Mortal Kombat Coming back...DoA as well :o Sonic 2 being remade in HD :o Perhaps the end of the world is just a reboot of the 90's xD {Which may be true}

I love capcom & I'm a fan of Dead or Alive, but neither one of them is at the top of the genre. Aksys is the current 2D fighting game champ, IMO, and Virtua Fighter 5 has yet to be dethroned as the best and deepest 3D fighter this gen.

I like how the guy tries to take a crap on Capcom by using bullshit. Very fitting. What I'm referring to?

None of that even makes any sense.

I dig the fighting game trash talk too! I was around and involved in not only the MK/SFII trash talk, but also the Tekken/VF fight as well! I may buy DoA instead of SF on the 3DS, but only because I've sort of grew out of the Street Fighter formula; it just doesn't do it for me anymore. And I may pick up DoA because I haven't played the series since the Dreamcast, but I really enjoyed it back then!

@ Evergreen- I totally forgot about Tekken Vs. Virtua Fighter trash talk! I didn't really get into any 3D fighter until Tobal 2, and even then, I rarely strayed out of the Tobal circle. My first Tekken game was Tekken Tag, and by then, it was pretty clear that Virtua Fighter and Tekken were two totally different things.

People take this stuff so seriously, like someone just peed on their dog. Everyone pushes their own product, it's no big deal. Personally, I hope DoA returns to glory. DoA Hardcore, along with Soulcalibur, were the two fighting games I had the most fun with in their time, so I'm fully prepared to give the new versions a chance. I'm kind of bored with 2D fighting games, anyway, and I will always have trouble enjoying Street Fighter as long as the characters continue to wear Hulk-hands and Hulk-feet.

Did Team Ninja really just claim that 3-D fighting games have some sort of infinite superiority to 2-D fighting games? If you know anything about the fighting game genre, you would know that Team Ninja just made the kind of comment that burrows a bloody mess into your brain.

Ummmm, what? That doesn't even make sense, they are 2 different types of game. That's like Blizzard shitting on Bioware for making RPGs because RTSes are real time.. The DoA series has always played a distant 3rd to Tekken and VF in the 3D fighting game. Capcom feels it's strength is in strict 2D plane. Also I'm tired 3D fighting game devs making it sound as Capcom and others of similar ilk are somehow stuck in the past when all they have added to their "3D fighting game" is the ability to move kinda "sideways", but when you fight it always resets to a traditional 2D plane view.. Only 3D fighting games I think I've ever seen where you are using everything has been CyberConnect2 with their Naruto Ninja storm game or something. So this whole 2d vs 3d fighting game thing, is a lot similar than they think..

guys, he's saying that the 3d fighting STYLE of doa trumps the classic 2d STYLE of ssf4. his statement does make sense, but i've got to say that all of my experiences with the doa games have kinda felt like button mashing contests. i'm intrigued, because i understand that the 3ds will probably make doa feel fun again, but i'm kinda hooked on capcom fighters right now. what's a guy to do? i know one thing, i will only be buying one fighting game at launch, i just don't know which one yet...

Me I'd rather buy DOA: Dimensions way before even thinking of buying SFIV3D. 1) I didn't care much for SF4. And who ever thought it be a good idea to put it on the 3DS was a moron. It shouldn't be even a thought at all. If it was on psp, it makes sense, but not the 3Ds.
2) I kinda have the same thinking for DOA being on it aswell. But I won't be surprised if Samus is announced as a fighter on that game. Thanks Other M, I guess.

SF has never lost it's steam. DOA has been living on borrowed time since DOA2.

There's only one reason anyone would choose DOA over SF, but with characters like Cammy, Chun Li, Sakura and Juri (and Elena and R.Mika, if they'd ever freaking bring them back!)- yeah, there really is no reason to choose DOA over SF anymore.

Seems any time there's an article about Team Ninja, people have to shit all over Other M in the comments. I wont waste my time defending the game because I suspect half of you guys didn't even play it. I just ask that you let it go. As far as DoAD vs. SSFIV, it's apples and oranges. I personally have always preferred classic 2D fighting, but Hayashi has a valid point about those weird figurine battles.

Does Team Ninja realize that SF4 3D just means the game will be displayed in a 3D fashion?

The mechanics are still a 2d world -_-

And as far as fighting games go, SF4 is basically what's hot right now in the fighting game community. Overseas, it's a bit lower on the ladder, but no where is DOA the featured series.

Capcom doesn't even have to reply to this random ass comment.
AceFlibble's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/26/2011 16:03

To be fair, the figurine battles in SF are going to be bullshit. It happens when you're not playing the game. What's even the point? It's a fighting game that requires you to not even be looking at the game. The core SF game, fine. The figurine battles are a pointless bunch of wank and there is simply no possible argument in favour of them.

Also, I think it is fair that on the 3DS platform, a 3D fighting game like DOA is in a better position to really make use of the hardware than a 2D fighting game like SF is. Again, I don't really see how anyone could debate this. It's pretty clear that a 3D game is going to show off and make sue of 3D hardware better than a 2D one will.

That's actually all I've gotten from that quote there. I don't see anyone outright sayign that 3D fighting games are better than 2D ones, just that in the context of the 3DS, 3D fighters do... make more sense, I suppose would be the way to put it.

As far as DOA vs SF goes, as a depressingly small number of people on here have already pointed out, it's a pointless argument. It's like comparing Counter-Strike to Gears Of War or Dead Space to Koudelka. If you play DOA with a SF mindset then it's going to be shit. If you play SF with a DOA mindset then it's going to be shit. You can not get more dissimilar than Street Fighter and Dead Or Alive. One, regardless of graphical style, is the purest of 2D fighters. The other has, since the very beginning, embraced the third dimension and made it a key component of the game mechanics. Just because two games both feature 1-on-1 battles where two ludicrous characters punch each other in the balls does not mean that they are comparable.

There's no need to really defend SF, we all know where that series stands. As far as DOA is concerned, it's been played in pro fighting game tournaments in the EU, Korea and Japan for years and it started being used in Evo five years ago, so yes, people do actually care about DOA and it has every right to be taken seriously.

People who only like 2D fighting games and don't like 3D ones should not bother with DOA. People who only like 3D fighting games and not 2D fighting games should not bother with Street Fighter. People who like neither shouldn't play either. People who like both should play both. There's really no reason to have to compare them or pit one against the other. Neither is inferior to the other. They're just different systems, different types of game.

i don't think anyone here is defending one game or the other. if anyone is defending anything, it's lamertag defending other M. i think everyone here though, is making fun of the comment listed. like how i said "this, coming from the game that feature bouncing tits". the dude from team ninja made the absurd comment based on one little function that SFIV has.

what gets me all riled up though, is how they think this 3rd Dimension makes the fighting genre better. apparently they've never played KoF, BlazBlue, or even DarkStalkers. WHAT MAKES THIS EVEN WORSE are people commenting on how since the game is a "2d fighter", it shouldn't be on the 3DS. the characters and the game still has a 3D aesthetic to it.

team ninja needs to suck a big fat dick. so does lamertag. i'm still mad at him for trying to tell me to NOT hate on other M. that game fucking blew and you all know it.

Team Ninja talked crap about Tekken a lot back in the day as well... The fact of the matter is that DOA is a big joke in the fighting game community; Team Ninja knows this. That is why they always talk so big. They will do fine drawing in casual players with big breasts and simple gameplay, but at the end of the day SSF4 will be the game people will be playing months after release, not DOA.
