Talks with Microsoft to blame for lack of FFXIV Xbox 360 photo

The PS3-bound MMO Final Fantasy XIV has yet to be announced for the Xbox 360, despite Final Fantasy XI’s status as the only playable MMO over Xbox LIVE. Look no further than Microsoft if you want an exclusivity villain. Producer Hiromichi Tanaka told VG247 that that the reason why the title wasn’t announced for the Xbox 360 is because an agreement with the platform publisher hasn’t been reached.

FFXI for 360,” Tanaka starts, “at that point PS2 didn’t have a hard disc [and] that was really difficult for us, but Xbox 360 had that from the beginning, so that really helped us. We managed to smoothly move onto 360 from the Windows version, so that was very good to us,” the producer says.

“However, for FFXIV, because 360 has its own policy with Xbox Live that is different from [the] Internet, that’s something we’re in discussions with Microsoft [about], to come to an agreement. That’s one of the reasons it’s not going to be launched at that point.”

While we’re unsure if Square-Enix has an Xbox 360 build of the MMO, it joins a list of several other online titles stuck in contractual limbo. Turbine is rumored to have Lord of the Rings Online ready to go and Cryptic Studios is still trying to hammer out the business end for Champions Online -- an MMO built with a controller in mind.

In the latest issue of Game Informer, Jon Bellis, a producer manager for Perfect World International, says the Microsoft and Sony want a “sizeable cut,” estimating that the publishers want 50-60 percent of free-to-play MMO transactions. Think about that in terms of subscription fees. But what exactly does Microsoft want? Nobody is talking specifics and, really, it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, Xbox 360-owners may not get Final Fantasy XIV … or anything.

[Thanks, Crunshii!]

Well MMOs on the 360 would be kind of tricky to begin with since Live users already pay a monthly subscription. Adding another charge personally doesn't seem right to me but I could see a "Premium Live" happening that lets users play any MMO released on the console. Or going the Free-to-Play route and have tons of DLC available to purchase would work well too I feel.

FFXI sucked on 360. 6hour install, mandatory 6gig hard drive, pay to play on top of XBL and it couldn't be traded in. Plus you need a keyboard to really do anything anyway. I don't really care if FFXIV comes to the 360 or not. I've already wasted my money on one lazy port.

All of those problems were present on the PC and PS2 versions. I don't understand why X360 users would want to be babysat.

I don't remember the PS2 having a hard drive to allocate a DVD's worth of content. If you could clarify that would help alot.

People seem to be misinformed about FFXI on XBox360, you didn't need a gold account to play the game online (its the only game I know of that did that) I think its because FFXI didn't use the Live! servers instead it had its own servers. I don't really know why FFXIV couldn't work the same way, seems more of a "Microsoft wants more money" problem then a "Xbox Live is different from [the] Internet" problem...

it came when you bought the PS2 version of the game. the PS2 version cost around $200 because it came with the hard drive. it was still a 6 hour install and still took up 6GB.

@Manasteel

The PS2 had a HDD addon. It actually had FFXI packed in with it. You realize that FFXI was developed as a PS2 game, right? The PC and 360 versions are ports.

"despite Final Fantasy XI’s status as the only playable MMO over Xbox LIVE"

Phantasy Star is a MMO on Live, no?

Actually, if you bought FFXI for the PS2 (as I did) it came in a huge box with the game, a manual and a 20gb hdd (no joke) that you installed into the PS2 (the hdd would only work if you also had the internet adapter) you had to install FFXI onto your HDD the same as all the other platforms it was on.

Yeah this sounds about right. It's the same old song and dance we hear from anyone trying to put an MMO on Live. Nothing new here.

I guess I meant Phantasy Star Universe which was on the 360 and still needed a subscription fee for the online component.

What I don't understand is how did SE pull it off with FF11 and now having issues with 14. What's the difference between the 2 when the only thing different is a HD upgrade to the game? everything else is almost the same.

PSU isn't an MMO though. Online for PSU is four player maximum.

they're probably having "issues" because MS probably wants them to have the game require a Gold Account, which FF11 didn't.

Gotcha. I never really played it but just assumed monthly fee = MMO.

@everyone who answered me

I guess I've been a bit too harsh with the game. I just assumed that all that hassle would have been too high a hurdle for most gamers especially since you couldn't resell it to any game store. I also didn't think the PC version required the hard install. I guess you really do learn something new every day.

@Crunshii They arn't using Playonline for this MMO, that's the difference, perhaps it's harder to use Xbox Live without Playonline. I don't see the prob though. everyone has PC's don't they? FFXI was better on PC anyway. I just plugged in a PS2 controller to my USB and off I went. graphics and display were way better, typing easier, much better experience.

I'm sick and fucking tired of hearing this same exact shit over and over again. MS needs to stop being so greedy for one second and realize that there are plenty of people using their console that woud love to play MMOs, but can't because MS wants more money that what the developers/publishers are willing to give. I know it's hard for them, but if for one second they think of their customers as more than just money, then something might get done around here.

Any FFXI players that are mad that they don't have XIV on 360, you know who to blame.

I just hope whatever MMO policy Microsoft makes it doesn't cost me an arm and leg to play online. I just need to get a new computer so I can just play the new MMO's on that instead...

@TJH518: Why upgrade when you can play WoW on your current PC? Get addicted, get WoW.

@Djnx: Recommending that a console gamer make that leap is akin to heresy, especially when comparing Final Fantasy's graphical prowess against WoW's.

They want a "sizable cut" for a game they didn't create and aren't hosting? I could understand if they were providing the servers, but damn. Microsoft's greed knows no bounds.

I guess that MS and Sony figure, they might as well scalp those fees, so they can use the funds to finance their MMO with monthly fees plan. This will come into play, once the rest of Western MMO houses learn that microtransactions > monthly fees.

Once a game gets the microtransaction, it has a plausible path to prevent 3rd party content and currency selling, like what ruined the '07 FFXI X-mas economy. Once the company gets their own Microtransactions in place, they can let the players pay them for better gear, etc. Also to note, it's easier to get attached to a game, with no monthly fee, or related obligation to play.

Sorry on the morning rant. I had a train of FFXI flashback to the economy fail. The game did recover a bit with it's task force, but you still have bot whores.

I don't get why people who have no interest in MMO are even commenting here.

Anyways, I think microtranscation (paying real money for gears)is horrid idea. I will quit playing MMO altogether if that was the norm. Your gear and the power of your toon depends on how loaded you are and how much you're willing to fork over? No thanks, I wouldn't have the incentive to even work for something anymore.
