The PS3-bound MMO Final Fantasy XIV has yet to be announced for the Xbox 360, despite Final Fantasy XI’s status as the only playable MMO over Xbox LIVE. Look no further than Microsoft if you want an exclusivity villain. Producer Hiromichi Tanaka told VG247 that that the reason why the title wasn’t announced for the Xbox 360 is because an agreement with the platform publisher hasn’t been reached.
“FFXI for 360,” Tanaka starts, “at that point PS2 didn’t have a hard disc [and] that was really difficult for us, but Xbox 360 had that from the beginning, so that really helped us. We managed to smoothly move onto 360 from the Windows version, so that was very good to us,” the producer says.
“However, for FFXIV, because 360 has its own policy with Xbox Live that is different from [the] Internet, that’s something we’re in discussions with Microsoft [about], to come to an agreement. That’s one of the reasons it’s not going to be launched at that point.”
While we’re unsure if Square-Enix has an Xbox 360 build of the MMO, it joins a list of several other online titles stuck in contractual limbo. Turbine is rumored to have Lord of the Rings Online ready to go and Cryptic Studios is still trying to hammer out the business end for Champions Online -- an MMO built with a controller in mind.
In the latest issue of Game Informer, Jon Bellis, a producer manager for Perfect World International, says the Microsoft and Sony want a “sizeable cut,” estimating that the publishers want 50-60 percent of free-to-play MMO transactions. Think about that in terms of subscription fees. But what exactly does Microsoft want? Nobody is talking specifics and, really, it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, Xbox 360-owners may not get Final Fantasy XIV … or anything.
[Thanks, Crunshii!]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
All of those problems were present on the PC and PS2 versions. I don't understand why X360 users would want to be babysat.
I don't remember the PS2 having a hard drive to allocate a DVD's worth of content. If you could clarify that would help alot.
it came when you bought the PS2 version of the game. the PS2 version cost around $200 because it came with the hard drive. it was still a 6 hour install and still took up 6GB.
The PS2 had a HDD addon. It actually had FFXI packed in with it. You realize that FFXI was developed as a PS2 game, right? The PC and 360 versions are ports.
Phantasy Star is a MMO on Live, no?
Actually, if you bought FFXI for the PS2 (as I did) it came in a huge box with the game, a manual and a 20gb hdd (no joke) that you installed into the PS2 (the hdd would only work if you also had the internet adapter) you had to install FFXI onto your HDD the same as all the other platforms it was on.
actually no. Phantasy Star Online was on the original Xbox. It hasen;t been put on the 360.
I guess I meant Phantasy Star Universe which was on the 360 and still needed a subscription fee for the online component.
PSU isn't an MMO though. Online for PSU is four player maximum.
Gotcha. I never really played it but just assumed monthly fee = MMO.
I guess I've been a bit too harsh with the game. I just assumed that all that hassle would have been too high a hurdle for most gamers especially since you couldn't resell it to any game store. I also didn't think the PC version required the hard install. I guess you really do learn something new every day.
Any FFXI players that are mad that they don't have XIV on 360, you know who to blame.
Once a game gets the microtransaction, it has a plausible path to prevent 3rd party content and currency selling, like what ruined the '07 FFXI X-mas economy. Once the company gets their own Microtransactions in place, they can let the players pay them for better gear, etc. Also to note, it's easier to get attached to a game, with no monthly fee, or related obligation to play.
Sorry on the morning rant. I had a train of FFXI flashback to the economy fail. The game did recover a bit with it's task force, but you still have bot whores.
Anyways, I think microtranscation (paying real money for gears)is horrid idea. I will quit playing MMO altogether if that was the norm. Your gear and the power of your toon depends on how loaded you are and how much you're willing to fork over? No thanks, I wouldn't have the incentive to even work for something anymore.
