Despite my best efforts, there will always be times when certain games go under my radar, and Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes was one of them.

When I was sent to the Capcom booth at PAX for this interview, I really wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. But when Product Marketing Manager Eric Monacelli was speaking, I realized that while this series may not be big on our shores, it's taken Japan by storm. (This will be the first game to hit our shelves with the Sengoku title; Devil Kings is as close as we got, a heavily-localized version of a PlayStation 2 Sengoku title.)

Set in feudal Japan and riddled with Japanese history, the game (from the producer of Devil May Cry 4) is an over-the-top action game. But Eric does take time to tell me why Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes is different from other big titles of a similar vein, such as Dynasty Warriors.

Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes has already been out in Japan for over a month, and according to Eric, it's so successful it's a game that's moving consoles. Due out October 12 in North America and October 15 in Europe, it already has some members of staff pretty excited (guess who), and will be available for PlayStation 3 and Wii.

I don't know why but I always feel like I'm playing Yakuza 3 whenever I play the demo.

Man, Hollie, you are working the front page today!

I just imagined the DToid US staff lazily outsourcing all their work to you and I laughed quite a bit.

Hahah Master Snake, it isn't like that. My videos are spaced out over a couple of days and the amercan boys will be rocking the front page in a few hours. Working on a GMT time scale means I get to fill European time slots.

Man the way people keep talking this game up I can't help but wonder if the demo is just a really poor representation of the final product. It's a whole lotta horrible. Maybe I'll have to give it a rent to really get a handle on it.

I actually really liked the demo - it has the "X factor" that Platinum seems to give their games, where you do absolutely batshit action segments for the win. I'm considering a day one purchase.

It really sounds like they're gonna' try to get this game out there, which is good. It's so rare that a new (well, it's sorta new to us at least) IP gets promoted.

I love beat em ups, but Dynasty Warriors/DW-style hack n' slash beat em ups are too repetitive, even for me. The one game that handled that kind of gameplay well I believe is Spartan: Total Warrior for PS2, Xbox, and GC. I love that game. I want a bunch of sequels and expansions to that.

That being said, Sengoku Basara does look more appealing to me than Dynasty Warriors. I might just go ahead and give Devil Kings for PS2 a try. It's so cheap on eBay, I won't feel like I've wasted my money if I get it and don't like it.

@Electrium

If you really liked the demo, you will love the game. The demo didn't do the game justice at all in my opinion.

I still can't believe they aren't including the Japanese audio in this release... this game will not sell well if they can't even please the actual fans of the game... how can they possibly expect a niche game like this to appeal to non-fans?

Devil Kings was, from all accounts, pretty damn bad.

If you can, you should instead eBay Sengoku Basara 2 for the PS2. It's incredible - it was the first game I imported a PS2 game and it was totally worth all the bullcrap I had to go through to make my PS2 play Japanese games.

Have you heard the english voice acting? It's pretty fucking fantastic (in an over the top retarded way). I grew to love the goofy DW/SW english dubs over time, and stopped using the Japanese voice tracks ages ago, so I never missed it when some didn't have them included.

Still not sold on this game though... it seemed a bit too simple for me even.

I feel your pain. When I heard about this game it grabbed my attention, so I watched the anime. I was still on the fence on whether or not I was going to import it since I heard the game didn't included the original voices. I don't understand why since this game is so huge in Japan. I just didn't like the English voices and they just give some of the characters a whole different personality. The breaking point for me was when I heard Kenshin's english voice. After hearing it.. I was pretty much speechless and thinking.. wtf.. was.. that? I pictured a very large lady with a very short haircut, flannel shirt, and I imagined she probably smoked about 2 packs of cigarette's a day. It is just very odd sounding. It made up my mind for me though, and i preordered the game that same day lol.

This so unfair. I will never be able to play this game. Ever. All my friends who have Wii HATE this kind of game. I don't know anyone who has a PS3. I do know lots of people with a 360 (me included). I can't import Sengoku Basara for my PSP because I don't know japanese.

I can't believe this has come to this. There's no true reason why most of japanese citizens have chosen to ignore the 360. It has awesome games too. I'm not saying PS3's and Wii's games are bad. On the contrary: they have marvelous games. My system of choice has the games I like the most.

I thought the demo was pretty awesome, and I'm glad that it showcased some mission variety. I was also impressed that the combat goes beyond just pressing square endlessly, and the boss fights definitely gave off a DMC vibe. Even the voice acting was enjoyable!

At $40, this might be something I get sooner rather than later.
