Despite my best efforts, there will always be times when certain games go under my radar, and Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes was one of them.
When I was sent to the Capcom booth at PAX for this interview, I really wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. But when Product Marketing Manager Eric Monacelli was speaking, I realized that while this series may not be big on our shores, it's taken Japan by storm. (This will be the first game to hit our shelves with the Sengoku title; Devil Kings is as close as we got, a heavily-localized version of a PlayStation 2 Sengoku title.)
Set in feudal Japan and riddled with Japanese history, the game (from the producer of Devil May Cry 4) is an over-the-top action game. But Eric does take time to tell me why Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes is different from other big titles of a similar vein, such as Dynasty Warriors.
Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes has already been out in Japan for over a month, and according to Eric, it's so successful it's a game that's moving consoles. Due out October 12 in North America and October 15 in Europe, it already has some members of staff pretty excited (guess who), and will be available for PlayStation 3 and Wii.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I just imagined the DToid US staff lazily outsourcing all their work to you and I laughed quite a bit.
It really sounds like they're gonna' try to get this game out there, which is good. It's so rare that a new (well, it's sorta new to us at least) IP gets promoted.
That being said, Sengoku Basara does look more appealing to me than Dynasty Warriors. I might just go ahead and give Devil Kings for PS2 a try. It's so cheap on eBay, I won't feel like I've wasted my money if I get it and don't like it.
If you really liked the demo, you will love the game. The demo didn't do the game justice at all in my opinion.
Devil Kings was, from all accounts, pretty damn bad.
If you can, you should instead eBay Sengoku Basara 2 for the PS2. It's incredible - it was the first game I imported a PS2 game and it was totally worth all the bullcrap I had to go through to make my PS2 play Japanese games.
Still not sold on this game though... it seemed a bit too simple for me even.
I feel your pain. When I heard about this game it grabbed my attention, so I watched the anime. I was still on the fence on whether or not I was going to import it since I heard the game didn't included the original voices. I don't understand why since this game is so huge in Japan. I just didn't like the English voices and they just give some of the characters a whole different personality. The breaking point for me was when I heard Kenshin's english voice. After hearing it.. I was pretty much speechless and thinking.. wtf.. was.. that? I pictured a very large lady with a very short haircut, flannel shirt, and I imagined she probably smoked about 2 packs of cigarette's a day. It is just very odd sounding. It made up my mind for me though, and i preordered the game that same day lol.
I can't believe this has come to this. There's no true reason why most of japanese citizens have chosen to ignore the 360. It has awesome games too. I'm not saying PS3's and Wii's games are bad. On the contrary: they have marvelous games. My system of choice has the games I like the most.
At $40, this might be something I get sooner rather than later.
