Sure the difference between the DSi XL and the DSi are pretty obvious on the outside, but really, isn't it what is on the inside that counts? So what is on the inside of the DSi XL and how does it differ from the DSi? The guys over at iFixit picked up the handheld and took it apart to discover just that.

Turns out not much has changed, but there are a few key differences. For one the battery is a lot bigger, most likely to compensate for the bigger screens. They also made the logic board much bigger, though they are still using a custom ARM CPU. Yea, it's basically the same thing just bigger.

The video above shows off iFixit's dissection, while the list below tells what they discovered.

Nintendo DSi XL Teardown [iFixit]

* Nintendo is again using a custom ARM CPU, manufactured in December of 2009. This chip is marked identically to the DSi, and definitely not the Tegra chip that had been rumored.

* The logic board grew proportionally to its casing. In this instance, Nintendo's going against the normal trend in electronics.

* Battery capacity is significantly greater than the DSi. The DSi uses an 840 mAh battery compared to the DSi XL's 1050 mAh battery.

* The DSi XL weighs in at 314 grams, about 45% more than its smaller DSi cousin (only 217 grams). A significant portion of the heft comes from the larger screens, and 4 grams comes from the added battery
juice. The XL is really on the outer limits of what people consider to be portable -- especially for a hand-held game console.

* Nintendo redesigned the battery connector to eliminate a long ribbon cable spanning the width of the old DSi.

* The lower display is held in place solely by the pressure of the logic board secured over it -- no screws.

* Although the screen size has been enlarged, the resolution still remains the same at 256 x 192 pixels per screen.

* Reassembling the triggers is quite difficult. Take them apart if only if you need to.

* Power management is now relegated to a TI 72071B0 charging circuit. This used to me a Mitsumi component in the smaller DSi.

Interesting. I still want one for awesomeness but no money is had.

For a new DS, anyway.

Are the shoulder buttons more prone to sticking than the DSi?

Nice find and yes, the battery life is the most major improvement (other than the obvious). I am really liking it so far compared to my DS Lite, though I'm not so used to holding it so far away from my face.

I totally want one of those, but I might just hold off and get a 3DS. depends on how the 3D works, though... being blind in one eye makes 3D kind of suck. :(

Well yeah, that's what i have been trying to tell everyone. It's just the DSi. But bigger.

Why was there so much pissy shit about it? it was just a different version of the same model, not a new console. it would be like thinking Nintendo released the GameCube and Wii just a year after the Nintendo 64 was out.

I'm sorry Nintendo. You know I like the Wii and DSi but I won't be getting this anymore. You should have announced the 3DS AFTER the DSiXL came out, not before it.

Oishidesu, yeah but the you probably would have been cmplaining about how nintendo should have told everyone about the 3DS before you went and bought a handheld that would be out of date in about a year.

Oh come on, the DSi is a good idea in general. We don't even know when the 3DS will release or it even looks like. We don't even know if the real technology behind it is still in alpha and they give s light demonstration of what it could be, that is, if they do not delay it for next year.

The DSLite was released in, what, 2006? It survived by itself until 2009 which was when the DSi came out. The DSiXL is just a new version of something that is already there with the same features, sort of like the GameBoy Pocket was with the original brick of the GameBoy. And the same was the DSLite for the phatty.

I say we might have the 3DS in our hands by 2012 or 2013 following Nintendo's patterns.

Where are the little people inside with their bajillion costume and props to play all those games?

From a marketing standpoint, the Dsi Xl has some issues. I'm fine with its release even though I got a Dsi, because it is just a version of it for people with bad eyes or something but with no compatibility differences, but by having a lot of advertising for it at gamestop and such people will think it is their new generation of handhelds.

I don't have a DSI yet because I've been waiting for limited edition models...that said, I'm probably goin to skip it and get a DSI XL...AFTER I find out how big the screen of the 3DS will be.

The funny thing is if they had chosen to release the dsi as an update of the xl people would still be buying shitloads. Its gotten to the point where ds consumers are just paying for the ds upgrade because its new. They basically announced the xl is obsolete before releasing it by announcing a 3ds.

"The XL is really on the outer limits of what people consider to be portable -- especially for a hand-held game console".

I'm getting sick of all this "it's hardly portable" shit.... We used to carry arround a GAMEBOY (that huge, heavy piece of brick) and it was portable. I think people are just bitchy and complain because they are used to have everything nice and ideal...

I can't wait for them to announce the price of the 3DS. That should be entertaining.
