Take-Two won't talk GTA on the Wii photo

In a recent GameDaily interview that CVG picked up on, Take-Two CEO Ben Feder would not comment on the possibility of a Wii incarnation of Grand Theft Auto. The comments come on the heels of an interview earlier this month, in which NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime said he would “love” to have a GTA on the Wii if it took proper advantage of the hardware. Feder had this to say about the subject.

I can't comment on it, but obviously we have one of the best selling third-party games on the Wii in Carnival Games from 2K Play, so we know the Wii pretty well.

We're building up assets to develop for the Wii and we're excited about its growth. I can't comment on GTA specifically on the Wii...
I think this is the first time I have ever seen a Grand Theft Auto question spun into a response about a collection of mini-games. Only a Nintendo console could create such possibilities. Despite the comments, I am still fairly hopeful that we will see something of the GTA nature on the Wii platform soon. Especially considering that a DS version is on the horizon.

Wow... I'm glad Take-Two thinks they "know the Wii" going off of Carnival Games. And it still sickens me that that's one of the best 3rd party games (sales-wise) on the console. :\

I guess "won't talk" doesn't mean "won't happen," but why not consider it immediately? If they Wii's success in the future is anything like it is now, then they'd be stupid to not put a good GTA game on the system.

Also, I can't wait to see how many people start outright blaming Nintendo for this.

GTA: Carnival Games confirmed. It's gonna be a collection of minigames including, but not limited to, shoot the hooker, run over the hooker and beat the hooker with the baseball bat. The obvious, have sex with the hooker will be left out because, come on, it's a kids console.

But... but.... BEEG AMERICAN TII-TIIS!

I think a GTA title on the wii would do quite well for itself. Sure it wouldn't be all hi-def glory like GTAIV, but It's quite feasible, It's got a dual layer DVD drive like the 360 does, so I'm sure that with the limited horsepower under the hood would mean less data for textures, which could easily equate to a larger city to roam around in that wouldn't choke the poor little money printer to death.

Well, GTA IV just came out. Rockstar is currently hard at work on the 360 DLC due to come out late this Fall or early Spring 09. So even if Rockstar starts to work on GTA Wii in early 09, we won't see anything until at least Spring 2011. That's a hell of a long wait and that's being optimistic in considering a Wii GTA is even in development. We might see a GTA sooner if they decide to port a PS2 or Xbox GTA, but a Wii-specific GTA is out of the question for the foreseeable future.

If you're a Wii-only owner, you'll be waiting a long time.

@lubczyk:

Possibly, though they might give it to a different studio to their main GTA one (Rockstar North?) and build it off the Bully engine which they have already ported. I imagine this is what they are doing with the DS one.

I understand what you're saying, but my point still stands. Even if GTA Wii began development in the beginning of 2007, we still wouldn't see the game in at least 2 to 3 years.

Bully and GTA are far too different. Bully didn't have to have large amounts of vehicles, police, guns, pedestrians, et cetera. Bully is much more enclosed than a GTA game.

For all we know, this is all just speculation and a GTA Wii isn't even on the table yet.
