Take-Two confirms Manhunt 2 hack on the PSP photo

After Rockstar's latest controversy magnet was released, a rumor began to surface of a hack on the PSP version of Manhunt 2 that made previously cut material available for viewing. A Take-Two representative has today confirmed the rumor, confessing that hackers had indeed made some (not all) edited content visible.

"Hackers apparently have altered one of those edits to produce an illegally modified version of the game that can only be played on an unauthorized, modified PlayStation Portable handheld system," the company said in a statement to GamePolitics. Take-Two's chairman Strauss Zelnick quite obviously urged against the use of the discovered exploit and was quick to throw in a reminder that the game is not for kids, intended for those aged 17 and above.

You don't need Destructoid to tell you what's going to happen next. If anybody needs me, I'll be in the corner, facepalming.

Why would you even say anything about this? I mean so it happened, drawing attention to it only makes it more prevalant. Maybe they are just worried about the nut jobs saying, "Well why didn't take two know about this?"

@ Aerox:

I'm calling JT right now!

Seriously, though, what was Rockstar thinking. This is a slap in the face of the ESRB and the game industry at large. We have dealt with Rockstar's shenanigans before, but after the 'Hot Coffee' incident you would think that they could get their shit in gear.

They just don't fucking learn, do they?

Yeah, it's especially reprehensible since they've been marketing this game to kids all along. I mean, who plays games besides kids, am I right?

You can't be serious... this is pretty much the exact same thing that happened with Hot Coffee. While this might not be on the same scale as Hot Coffee was, it definitely does not help the gaming community. Variable Gear is right: They just don't fucking learn.

Of course this would happen. You think they'll hack the other versions as well?

if this goes to court, there is no god.

a stock psp with the UMD copy of the game cannot access this content, only users intentionally pirating the game have access to said content. so basically, this is like punshing rockstar b/c there are software pirates. wtf?

ya it isnt the same situation. A home brewed psp is a lot diffrent than using a gameshark or modding a pc version

Yes, I'm sure Rockstar accidentally left that content in after the Hot Coffee scandal. Their games thrive on controversy and shock value.

Greedy bastards, the whole lot of them. They're hurting the reputation of the entire video game industry with their ridiculous tactics.

PC mods, gamesharks, or hacked PSP's... this is just bad for Rockstar. This is going to turn into something big, but what will it be?

So basically, the only people who will be able to access this content are people who are already breaking the law with illegaly modified consoles and illegaly hacked versions of the game. Hot Coffee or not, it's retarded that Rockstar could be held liable.

Furious George.... the hack DOES exist for PS2, done in much the same way it's done for the PSP, actually a little more easily. So now that's 2 versions that have been hacked.

What? Again?
At least violence is more accepted than sex, right?

@galagabug
Sadly that hacking and modifying will probably just end up becoming "with little effort one can access the content".

Dear Rockstar,

Stop leaving shit in your games that you don't want people to get access to, because you just know that if it's in there at all someone will eventually get access to it, and you will get irrationally blamed for it by every Jack Thompson wannabe from here to Coral Gables, Florida.

On the other hand, if this is some sort of bullshit ploy on your part to generate more Hot Coffee like controversy, then fuck you in the anus with a splintery two-by-four.

Sincerely,
A gamer who's getting sick of you stirring shit up like this, whether it's unintentional or not.

By the way, did anyone else notice the first comment to the gamepolitics article, from "jack thompson, attorney"?

So do game developers just leave EVERYTHING in the "game" folder that they make on the DVD? No wonder Rockstar's complaining that Xbox DVD's don't have enough space-- They don't think to get rid of the Hot Coffee!

Uh, actually, if I'm right, the hack only removes the filter on the kill scenes. It's not unlocking any AO content left in the game, it's just uncensoring the kills. Frankly, I don't have a problem with it either. The game shouldn't have been censored or given an AO rating to begin with, it's on the same level as the first Manhunt in terms of violence and such.

Also, the whole plier testicle rip removal was bullshit too. In the first Manhunt you could sneak up behind an enemy and "cup" his groin with a sickle and pull. That is essentially tearing your nuts and dick off, but it was still in the game when it came out. So I don't understand why the pliers one couldn't be either.

I'm glad they did this. If there wasn't some way to play the uncensored version I'd have no interest in this game whatsoever.

It was a bold move by Rockstar - but it was the right one. Censorship does not belong in gaming!

Hi, there's no extra content being unlocked, just less censored.

I think that Rockstar's sloppy manufacturing process has to be given at least as much scrutiny as the censorship angle. I can't imagine that they do this sort of thing by accident, there must be some programmer slipping this stuff back in or just pasting over it when word comes down to remove it from the final version of the game. I know that a lot of content gets overlooked, but seriously, QA much?

It makes sense, i mean the all of the violent content is on the disc, and the video effects are just overdone on top of the existing pure violience, so i would imagine that an action replay could remove these visual effects on the ps2 version as well. If hackers find a way to do this through action replay, i may get this game for ps2 (instead of wii) and buy an action replay (if it isn't to costly that is. . .)

->Variable Gear: The sales figures this will controversy will generate will almost certainly prove that statement wrong.

I don't know what you folks are all worried about. Jack thompson and his ilk have time and time again proven utterly ineffectual at doing any harm to the gaming industry, other than fearmongering among the part of the population who believes his bullshit anyway. Those people were never going to buy games. Why should developers bow to censorship any more than they have to. Rockstar removed the content from the game. The only way of accessing it is by modifying your game. Besides, all the hack does is remove the obfuscation of the violence, as rockstar taking it out altogether would be infeasible in terms of time and money involved.

There will be a shitstorm over this, but you know what? It'll be entirely unjustified. This is a game for adults. If a kid plays it, that's solely their legal guardian's responsibility. And considering this is a game for adults, shouldn't said adults be able to chose on their own to modify their game, which they purchased and own, to their leisure?

This is awesome.

You have to give credit to Rockstar. Not only did they circumvent the censorship of their original product, but they did so by letting the gaming community "crack" the proper version.

Thank you Rockstar.
Thank you gaming community.
Thank you Jesus.
