Rumor: Project Cafe controller has front-facing camera
by Dale North

A source has told Develop that Nintendo's new console, codenamed Project Cafe, will include a front-facing camera in its pad-like controller. They say that the camera can be used for in-game images. With the already rumored touchscreen and all, this is sounding a lot like a 3DS. In fact, some are saying that the 3DS could act as a replacement controller.

“The functions are the same,” the source said. “It is a standard wireless controller added with a front-facing camera and touch screen."

The source also confirms some of the other rumored controller details, like the six-inch touchscreen and the standard button layout. A stylus is also a possibility.

Nintendo would put a front-facing camera to good use, I'm sure. If there is one, I'm sure we'll get examples of its usage next month at E3, where this console and its controller are scheduled to be unveiled.

Project Cafe to be named 'Stream'?

From "Wii" to "Stream," eh? One-track mind, Nintendo, one-track mind. Other new rumors from the IGN party van include: Could retail between $350 and $400. Being manufactured in Taiwan. Could ship as early as this October. Will be based on a version of AMD's R700 GPU architecture, not on Fusion. Will definitely output in HD (phew!). Mmmmm! Delicious speculation!

Rumor explosion: HD Wii 2 / Stream / Project Cafe photo
Rumor explosion: HD Wii 2 / Stream / Project Cafe

Update:  The system is now rumored to be called Stream.

The rumors concerning a new HD console from Nintendo have ramped up to absurd proportions, to the point where it's getting difficult to keep track of everything.

Some of the rumors sound like total BS, while some are more sensible. Here's loads of them, so make your own mind up:

  • Square Enix, Capcom, Sega, Konami, Activision, Rockstar/Take Two, Electronic Arts, Namco and Ubisoft have development kits, and all have at least one game in the works.
  • Nintendo may not launch with any first party games, as it plans to really support third parties this time.
  • It won't have "Wii" in its name.
  • Third party support extends to hardware, with a better storage solution being developed.
  • Better download service.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword may launch at the same time as Project Cafe. This could lead to another Twilight Princess situation.
  • Hideo Kojima has been mentioned in conjunction with the system.
  • Retro is working on a title that "everybody wants." It's been suggested that it could be Eternal Darkness 2.
  • A Resident Evil game is in the works (when isn't one in the works?)
  • A StarFox title is being worked on.
  • Grand Theft Auto V will be a Project Cafe title in addition to everything else.
  • A mockup was discovered and posted to 4chan (see gallery).

Rumor: New HD Nintendo console planned for 2012 photo
Rumor: New HD Nintendo console planned for 2012
by Jim Sterling

Rumors of a Wii HD have been floating around since the dawn of time, but Game Informer has boldly stated that various sources are now corroborating the development of some sort of HD Nintendo system with a 2012 launch date in mind.

According to the rumor, the new system will have visuals that directly compete against the Xbox 360 and PS3, though they may or may not fall short of the PS3's benchmark. The latter half of 2012 is the expected release window, and publishers are already alleged to have seen it.

Nobody has yet stated whether or not it will have "Wii" in the name or if it will feature backwards compatibility. An anonymous source has said, however, that "Nintendo is doing this one right. [It’s] not a gimmick like the Wii."

This is the first time substantial details have ever accompanied Wii successor rumors, so it's eyebrow-raising stuff. Nintendo has neither confirmed nor denied the rumor, telling people to "stay tuned" for its E3 announcements. Exciting!
