Here's the full rundown on all the Wave 4 amiibo madness today, including GameStop's plan

Apr 02 // Chris Carter
GameStop rundown: So you may have heard that GameStop will be putting everything up online at 3PM EST today. Based on a memo I've obtained from a source (in the gallery below), that isn't going to happen exactly as planned. At 3PM EST, web-in-store will go live. What does that mean? Basically, you can go to a local GameStop location, give them your information, pay-up-front, and they'll order it for you. According to this memo online orders will not go live at exactly 3PM, and employees are instructed to direct people to stores. Sleazy as all hell, I know. Online orders will go live "sometime after that," but an exact time isn't given. A source has estimated "4 or 5 PM EST." For convenience and quick ordering, a $77.94 pack will be provided that includes all of the standard figures, sans the Splatoon 3-pack, which will retail for $34.99 as a separate purchase. As an added tip some stores have Wario listed in their systems for in-store pickup -- this is the only amiibo so far in Wave 4 that has this option. It may be a common figure, but it doesn't hurt to call your store and ask, as you might be able to lock him in before the flood gates open at 3PM EST. Ordering tips and potential rarity: You can pre-order them by way of web-in-store or online, both of which ship to your house. According to the memo there will be no "traditional" in-store pre-orders (outside of Wario), it will all be online. I don't have confirmation on the stock and I don't know if it will sell out in minutes, but it never hurts to be prepared. So here are some words of wisdom for online orders. Log into GameStop.com now and check your account. Make sure you don't need to take the time to reset your password (I had to today), your default address is correct, and if you want, store a payment method in the system. This last bit isn't recommended but it can get you checked out faster if you want to try to grab more stock after you order your favorites. You can not only try the default link, but the mobile site as well if anything goes out of stock. You can try it on your phone or manually bookmark http://m.gamestop.com/. It's weird, I know, but Shulk and the New 3DS XL were showing on up on mobile with working links after they sold out on the core site. Because Ness is exclusive, aim to get him first if you are "quick-ordering" before they sell out. You could always trade him for someone you want. Based on Japan availability, Robin and Lucina are the next rare ones in line. This also lines up with the fact that past Fire Emblem figures were already rare, and since they both work with Codename S.T.E.A.M., there will be some sort of demand for them. I haven't heard any substantial rumors about the rarity of other figures. As for other stores, it's all up in the air but we'll keep you posted. Word is that Amazon will be going live today and there's always Best Buy, Target, and Toys"R"Us. For more tips follow this guide.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker's amiibo functionality adds a small incentive to replay every level

Mar 21 // Chris Carter
[embed]289368:57872:0[/embed] Like the checkbox that appears after grabbing every crystal and completing the extra objective, it's easy to become addicted to filling out every entry. It sounds like an overly simplistic little thing, but it emboldened me to replay every map again and find that damn Pixel Toad. It's a nice way to get people to return, and it doesn't hurt that the core game is already great to begin with. Get a quick look at the functionality in the video above, and note that other amiibo function as power-ups of sorts, earning you extra lives with a tap. Of course, the best part about this particular amiibo mechanic is that Toad, the physical toy, isn't impossible to find. While retailers knew ahead of time that select exclusives wouldn't be replenished for weeks, if not months (I'm looking at you Target), Toad is readily available at every location I've visited. Heck, even his scalped price online is roughly $18, a far cry from the $60 or more asking price of the Trinity and other select rares to this day. I'm also a fan of the way Shulk was handled in Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, since you can replicate the amiibo bits by way of Play Coins and StreetPass. If Nintendo is going to add amiibo support in future games, it needs to either plan ahead of time if the figures are going to be retailer exclusives (Meta Knight's unique features in Rainbow Curse being lost to most of the market is still a tragedy), or allow unlocks through other means (no one is missing out not having Shulk for Xenoblade).

Oh, and you can actually buy the figure too

NES-era Godzilla immortalized as an action figure

You can bend his tail, but I wouldn't recommend it
Mar 20
// Jordan Devore
NECA is on a roll with these videogame-inspired toys, though admittedly Godzilla looks a bit like he's decked out in camouflage here. The 6" figure is modeled after Godzilla: Monster of Monsters, and it comes packaged in a cool faux-weathered box based on the NES game's cover art. It's expected to ship in July 2015, and pre-orders are open for $21.99. Don't make eye contact. [Via Super Punch]

Fire Emblem amiibo support for Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. doesn't add much

Mar 12 // Chris Carter
Marth and Ike can both be used as soon as the character select screen is available. All you have to do is tap them down after hitting the "amiibo" button, and have a New 3DS available (the release date for the adapter for old 3DS units is still unknown). From there, they'll be available until they die in battle, where they can't be revived -- to bring them back to life, you just tap the amiibo again after the mission is over. Depending on your view this is either a cute nod to the Fire Emblem series or literal DRM to make sure you don't borrow your friend's figures. Personally, I'm far more impressed by Marth's abilities. His main power, "Destiny," allows him to completely avoid Overwatch counter-attacks from enemies, which sounds overpowered but is actually balanced out by his main statline. You can use him to draw out some Overwatch attacks for other characters which adds quite a bit of tactical value to his deployment.  His loadout includes his falchion, which is his core melee weapon, in addition to a less steam-costly rapier, which is his less powerful, precision-based weapon. The rapier has the added benefit of bringing an Overwatch counterattack to the table, and it can hit weak points for a bigger steam-to-damage ratio. As you can probably tell Marth is entirely melee based, and like Ike, he cannot use sub-weapons. He also has a low defense rating and a lower HP pool, so you definitely have to be more careful in terms of his positioning. He in turns mixes up your style because his survival is dependent on his teammates. Oh, and his area-of-effect (AOE) heal super can be a life saver. He's pretty much useful in every situation if you use him correctly, even if he never really grows as a unit over the course of the game. While I'm a fan of Ike's design, his prowess in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is a lot less impressive. With nearly 50% more health than Marth he's basically a tank, in addition to having a larger steam pool and a better steam recharge rate. That's basically Ike in a nutshell, as there's nothing really fun or exciting about him. His special ability feels throwaway -- "Push" lets you move crates or enemies. Lame. Ragnell is his main blade, which does have a ranged ability, but it's extremely weak. Urvan functions as his secondary weapon, an axe weapon that can hit multiple enemies right in front of him. With no subweapons to mix up his style or no Overwatch capabilities of any kind, he has even less tactical value. Ike's frontal AOE super is also yawn-inducing, since it feels like over half the characters in the game have the exact same offensive AOE power. While I'm not all that impressed by Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.'s amiibo functionality yet, I'm much more excited at the prospect of getting the whole four-unit crew together at once -- something that isn't possible right now because Robin and Lucina aren't even up for pre-order yet. We'll provide updates for those two figures shortly after their product launch. For now though, it's best to think of Code Name's amiibo support as a nice little extra, nothing more.
S.T.E.A.M amiibo support photo
So far, at least
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is out, and you can read the full verdict here on the core game. Of course, where there is amiibo functionality to be covered, I'll be there. Right now, Code Name supports four total figures -- Mart...
