Review: Tales from the Borderlands: Atlas Mugged photo
Review: Tales from the Borderlands: Atlas Mugged
by Darren Nakamura

[Disclosure: Anthony Burch, who consulted on the story for Tales from the Borderlands, was previously employed at Destructoid. As always, no relationships, personal or professional, were factored into the review.]

Tales from the Borderlands: Zer0 Sum released nearly four months ago, and it was fantastic. As an introduction to the intertwined stories of Rhys and Fiona, it did everything it needed to do. It laid out the groundwork for the main narrative arc, it kept me engaged and laughing throughout, and it ended on a note that left me anxious to continue the story as soon as possible.

And then the waiting happened. Months passed with little word on the second episode. Could it live up to the anticipation after all this time?

It turns out that it does. Though perhaps not quite as excellent as the first episode, this one turned out great in its own right, and now I'll be eagerly awaiting the next installment. I just hope it isn't another four months away.

Final Fantasy Record Keeper headed to a smartphone near you this spring

This year, Square Enix is makin' it rain Final Fantasy spinoffs on us. I mean, we've got Final Fantasy Type-0 HD coming in hot just next week, and DeNA and Square Enix just revealed the launch of Final Fantasy: Record Keeper ...

Mevius Final Fantasy looks kind of hot, aside from the mobile thing

I've got to hand it to Square Enix -- Mevius Final Fantasy does look impressive. Certainly no All the Bravest. I also don't want to play games on my cellphone so this is not for me. So it's fine that it is only coming to iOS and Android in Japan this spring. Though I am feeling the weird backless, capris overalls at 1:13. Wish I had back muscles like that.

Tales from the Borderlands Episode 2 set to release week of March 17

Downwell has a simple premise but it's damn fun photo
Downwell has a simple premise but it's damn fun
by Darren Nakamura

A glance at Downwell's tricolor palette in still shots doesn't really do it justice. Watching it in motion gives a better idea what it does, but not until actually playing it does it all click. It is built around a simple mechanic: press the button to jump; press it again in the air to fire gun boots downward.

The recoil doesn't act as a double jump exactly. No extra height can be gained from the shots, but the little protagonist's descent can be slowed. The catch is that the boots have limited ammunition in a magazine and reloading requires a stop on solid ground. Those simple mechanics produce a surprising depth in the trip down the well.
