It's been too long since I've played Mario Golf, it's underwater now

It feels like it's been forescore since I've played Mario Golf. Maybe the 3DS' upcoming World Tour is a good place to rectify that. Or maybe I'll finally take a swing at Hot Shots. Then again, The Golf Club has the best name...

Review: Powerstar Golf photo
Review: Powerstar Golf
by Chris Carter

As a young gamer, often times my first foray into the wide world of sports was through videogames. Before I knew how to run a slant route in a real-life game of football, I knew how to run something in Tecmo Bowl and Madden.

The same could be said for the greenest of all sports, which was first introduced to me by way of Nintendo's Golf for the NES. Even though I had no idea what "par" was or the difference between a driver and a wedge, there was something tranquil about hitting a tiny ball down a giant digital course.

Powerstar Golf for the Xbox One captures that feeling as well, even if it has a few other issues in tow.

Powerstar Golf: full of RPG-like systems, cloud features photo
Powerstar Golf: full of RPG-like systems, cloud features
by Dale North

Xbox One golf launch title Powerstar Golf didn't gel with me the first time I played it, but after seeing the depth of some of its systems last week I feel better about it.

Its RPG-ish leveling system and cloud-based competitive features sound like something I could really get into.

Powerstar Golf is in the rough photo
Powerstar Golf is in the rough

Powerstar Golf is a launch title for Xbox One. It's an arcade golf title, but it's no Hot Shots Golf. On the surface it seems like it's par for the arcade-y golf course, but a few issues have it stuck in the sand traps.

If you were to pull out the big-headed/small-bodied Japanese characters of Hot Shots Golf and replace them with taller, comic book-ish characters, you'd have something that looks a lot like Powerstar. The courses are sharp and clean, and the HUD is exactly as you'd expect. Its environments look nice, though there's nothing about it that screams next gen.

The control scheme and shot mechanic are also pretty similar to Hot Shots. It uses the three button press swing -- once to start the swing, again to set the power, and one more time to set accuracy. Even course navigation and the putting grid are right in line with what you'd see from Clap Hanz's work.

Review: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 photo
Review: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14
by Patrick Hancock

The Tiger Woods series has always been my favorite of EA's annual sports games. Ever since I performed my first virtual swing with the analog sticks, I became hooked. I don't like it enough to even think about paying every single year, but it's the only one I keep tabs on and check out every so often.

It's hard to add enough new content to a yearly sports game to really make it worth paying $60 every time. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 has a fair amount of quality additions, for both avid golf fans and just fans of the videogame itself. Some of the additions seem like they should have been in the game years ago, but I guess giving the option to play at nighttime wasn't high on the to-do list.
