Hohokum soothes the minds of everyone who plays it photo
Hohokum soothes the minds of everyone who plays it
by Bill Zoeker

We recently had the pleasure of diving into Hohokum with Sr. Producer, Zach Wood, live on Dtoid.TV. It seemed to put everyone in the room into a technicolor joy trance, and we've heard similar reports of players elsewhere being pacified by the vibrant world of Hohokum. Watch the video above to see for yourself.

Helldivers will let you play every combination of co-op imaginable photo
Helldivers will let you play every combination of co-op imaginable
by Bill Zoeker

Before GDC, we were joined by some of the fine folks at Sony live on Dtoid.TV. Above is a video of us playing an early build of Helldivers with its Sr. Producer, Mark Rogers.

Helldivers is a game that admittedly went under my radar literally until the moment we showed it off on Dtoid.TV. Then I found out it's being developed by the same folks who brought us Magicka. Then I found out, when it comes out for PS3, PS4, and the PS Vita this summer, Helldivers will allow you to play with friends locally, online, and across all three platforms in any combination. I am super down for this title. It seems our cooperative options are narrowing these days, and that's really the only kind of multiplayer I care about.

Freedom Wars warns of million year prisons, giant monsters

Our freedom is under attack, America (or Japan). First it was the war on Christmas. Then the war on Christianity. Soon we will all be born slaves, toiling for the mooching liberal welfare state and unable to bring guns into ...

Goodbye Solid Ground, hello neon blindness

The above video is a demonstration of Goodbye Solid Ground, a game where the player rescues cats from a deteriorating environment by throwing them through a portal. It should probably have come with a seizure warning, or at ...

First Nosgoth footage full of fun vampire carnage

In-game stuff that isn't menus starts at 4:30. While Chris was bitter about it cashing in on the Legacy of Kain name, he did find Nosgoth a surprisingly enjoyably F2P third-person shooter in his preview. From this footage, I...

Sexy horse traps in Deception IV's Rube Goldberg machine

I was watching Mouse Hunt the other day expecting it to not hold up since seeing it in theaters in 1997. Remember when a children's film could start with a bleak funeral that ends with a body in a sewer and continue towards ...

Preview: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze photo
Preview: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
by Casey Baker

When Retro Studios' Donkey Kong Country Returns released for the Wii in 2010, I was ecstatic. Since I was 13 years old when I played Rare's original Donkey Kong Country for the first time, I marveled at its solid platforming and varied level design. Returns proved to be as solid in gameplay ideas as the original franchise, and when it was re-released in 3D for the 3DS, I did not hesitate to purchase it again.

Next month, Retro Studios is releasing a sort of sequel to Returns in the form of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. After experiencing a solid four-hour chunk of the game that gave me enough time to get to the very end of World 4, I am glad to report that Tropical Freeze won't be just another by-the-numbers sequel, but an engaging addition to the revamped franchise that adds some intriguing new mechanics while taking out minor annoyances of the original Returns.

DayZ gang forces players into life or death duel photo
DayZ gang forces players into life or death duel
by Conrad Zimmerman

The new crop of open-world titles, like Day Z, give interesting insight into the people who play games. Take this roving gang of players as an example, who have encountered two people wearing the same color jacket and determine that they should fight to the death for the privilege of being allowed to continue to wear it. Here they are, playing a game in which exerting power over others violently seems to be the primary method of advancement, and instead use that power to create amusement.

It's still cruel, yet it seems altogether generous at the same time. Out of the three people held at gunpoint, only one is killed and it's done through adherence to a few defined rules. The gang even awards an additional prize to the winner, as if not killing and looting them weren't enough. It's the very definition of emergent play, a game borne of circumstances and opportunity rather than predetermination. Pretty funny too.

No brakes racing in GTA Online - Challenge Scot photo
No brakes racing in GTA Online - Challenge Scot
by Jamie McGinn

This week's challenge takes place in Grand Theft Auto Online in which I must win a race without braking whilst constantly accelerating. I'd like to think I'm actually pretty decent at driving in GTA V, but one bad corner is going to completely ruin my chances of winning in a race.

If you've got any ideas for future challenges you'd like me to have a go at, feel free to leave them in the comments!
