Okay, maybe I haven't played a Dragon Ball Z game since Budokai 2, but I think that claim would hold up, even if it's my affinity for 2D speaking. But seriously, this years-in-the-making, well animated, Mugen-based DBZ fan game looks rad as heck. It's the best Mugen-based fighter since Dong Dong Never Die.

That Yajirobe in the stage background is amazing.

A great way to waste time is to Google any odd topic that happens to pop into your head and play a game of link tag until you strike pay dirt. My latest excursion led me to Sonic Racer 4K, a Java-based Sonic fan game. But what really caught my attention was the name of the developer: Markus Persson.

You know, the Minecraft guy.

After a little more digging, I discovered an old resume that he still hosts on the Mojang page, even though it's no longer directly linked anywhere on the site. Turns out Notch was a frequent participant in the Java 4K Programming Contest, which tasks entrants to create a Java game with a total file size less than 4K bytes. Sonic Racer 4K was a 2005 submissions, but he also made other 4K fan games, including MEGA4KMAN and Left 4K Dead.

I don't know how much of this is common knowledge, but it's certainly a big surprise to me. I like learning about what folks did before they were famous. As for the games themselves, they are impressive considering the constraints, even if they are kind of poopy. Test them out yourselves!

Super Mario Crossover, the pixel-for-pixel recreation of Super Mario Bros. that features a selectable cast of NES stars, was all set for the big 3.0 update this past June. It was unfortunately delayed a month, but it is now available for your pleasure. Head on down to developer Exploding Rabbit's site to give the new revision a spin.

New to 3.0 are the levels from Super Mario Bros. Special, a Japan-only port / remake for the NEC PC-8801 and Sharp X1; a difficulty system that drastically alters level layouts; and more skins for levels and characters to make them look like various other games on the NES, SNES, Game Boy, and so on. More tweaks and skins are planned for the future, but this is likely the last big update.

Exploding Rabbit is now hard at work on Super Retro Squad, which follows the style of Super Mario Crossover only with original characters and levels. While originally looking like an NES game, the graphics have been beefed up to a more detailed 16-bit style, though it looks like there may still be skins to "downgrade" the look to 8-bit and handheld styles. The game will also feature four-player online and local co-op. You can check the new screens below.

I've said this many times before, but the Mega Man fan community never ceases to amaze me. After a number of passionate fan projects that set out to re-create the classic feel of the 8-bit series, another project caught my eye -- a demake of Mega Man Legends 3.

The developers of the game sought to do what Capcom didn't -- provide a bit of closure to the Legends series, a franchise that previously left off with Mega Man Volnutt stranded on the moon. With a ton of official Legends and Capcom staffers on this, I absolutely can't wait to see how the finished product turns out, and I'm downloading the demo with glee as we speak.

As a side note, you need to set your PC to Japan in your regional settings to play this (Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Region and Language > Administrative > Change System Locale).

I've been championing the fan game community since the day I joined Destructoid, yet I've never before anticipated the release of a fan game with as much fervor as I'd reserve for an official title until Mega Man Unlimited.

It's easy to claim "laziness" or "unoriginality" when talented garage developers apply their skills towards a take on a preexisting IP, but I contend that the best among them possess a great sense of direction for where said IP could go. Whether it's a previously unexplored mechanic in the context of the series or simply a streamlining of familiar concepts, fan games present a wealth of potential, thus it would be foolish to simply brush them aside offhand.

More impressive than a great fan game, however, is a great fan game that completely deceives you into thinking it's an official product. There's usually a "tell" that betrays the illusion -- original art assets that clash with the style of any borrowed assets, an overabundance of recycled music, controls or physics that feel uncomfortably off, etc. But if the deception is successful....

Not only did Mega Man Unlimited deceive me completely, it also may very well be one of the best Mega Man games ever made.

The other day, I shared with you all a new Sonic the Hedgehog fan game, Sonic After the Sequel. In particular, I made note of the game's unbelievably amazing OST. We're talking professional grade material here, equaling and possibly surpassing any official Sonic soundtrack. It's that good.

Though I provided a link to the full soundtrack and shared a small handful of tracks from YouTube, I wanted to give you guys a little more. It's a good thing that Falk Au Yeong, one of the game's seven composers, hit me up with a link to a YouTube "Sound Test" of sorts. That should allow you to quickly sample the audio as well as jump right into the full playlist for the extended tracks. And if you want to download the album in mp3 format, hit up either this link or this one.

Oh! And the OST for the game preceding this one, Sonic Before the Sequel, is pretty kickass too. I've embedded a YouTube sampler below along with links to the playlist and mp3 download.
