Swords and Soldiers 3D is a thing

Swords and Soldiers is one of my favorite time wasters ever. As a castle defense game, you're basically tasked with building units, sending them off in a straight line to fight, and hoping your enemy doesn't counter or outwi...

Review: Vampire Crystals photo
Review: Vampire Crystals
by Tony Ponce

The rare act of generosity aside, support for WiiWare has been reduced to almost nothing, leaving the platform to shuffle along until the earth swallows it up. How fitting then that one of its few releases in recent months would revolve around vampires hunting zombies -- the undead preying upon one another is the perfect visual metaphor for WiiWare's current status.

Vampire Crystals is but a modest twin-stick shooter in the vein of Smash TV. It actually does one better than the arcade classic by allowing up to four people to play cooperatively or competitively. Fun in small bursts for anyone who wants to shoot up rotting corpses on a Sunday morning.

And after about an hour or so, it becomes both painful and painfully boring.

Retro City Rampage Wii version a '$20,000 gift to fans'

Brian Provinciano wanted to keep his word. That is the reason Retro City Rampage released on WiiWare earlier this week. Its developer has no expectation of turning a profit on the platform, calling the move a "...

Retro City Rampage Wii out Feb 28, includes prototype ROM photo
Retro City Rampage Wii out Feb 28, includes prototype ROM
by Tony Ponce

Retro City Rampage for WiiWare missed its January release window, but creator Brian Provinciano has set his foot down and stated that the game will finally arrive next week on February 28. RCR's entire development history has been a long string of delays, so that's not too surprising. It's just ironic that the Wii was one of the first announced platforms but will end up being the last to receive the open-world nostalgia bomb.

But Brian appreciates Wii owners' patience and has decided to make the wait worth their while. In addition to being $10 versus $15 on other platforms as well as compatibility with every single Wii controller configuration, RCR on WiiWare will also include "ROM City Rampage," the game's original prototype ROM before development shifted to from NES to PC. It's essentially Grand Theftendo minus the GTA3 references, and it's 100% NES hardware-accurate!

Those who own RCR on Steam will also have access to "ROM City Rampage," which will be available as a free update day and date with the WiiWare version. Sounds like a pretty cool gift! I'm looking forward to checking it out!

Check out some sweet, sweet concept art for Mega Man 10

The Mega Man Network has shared some Mega Man 10 robot master concept art from the R20+5 blowout book, and man is it interesting. Most of these, I think, look better than the final designs. Some of them in particular are much...

Retro City Rampage still has a secret photo
Retro City Rampage still has a secret
by Jonathan Holmes

Retro City Rampage was one of the most interesting releases of 2012. Written and designed largely by one man, the game was in development for years, leaving hungry fans to lay in wait. Xbox 360 and Wii owners may still be waiting, as RCR is yet to hit those consoles. That will start to change tomorrow when the game finally sees release on XBLA.

It will be interesting to see how well the game sells on the platform that was once thought of as the best bet for indie developers. It will also be interesting to see if the influx of new players will help to unravel all of RCR's secrets, including the shoe car seen above. It looks like a great choice for traversing a field of man-eating plants.

Also, a reminder to those of you who like Destructoid: You can alter your appearance in RCR to look like me, Jim Sterling, Conrad Zimmerman, Max Scoville, and a variety of other higher-profile members of the gaming enthusiast community. It's pretty neat!
