Review: Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown photo
Review: Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown
by Brett Zeidler

Before Street Fighter IV completely revamped excitement in the fighting game scene back in 2009, Virtua Fighter was still going strong with the fifth installment hitting a couple years earlier. Even though the arcade, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 iterations were all vastly different from one other (with each having their own set of unique problems), Virtua Fighter 5 was heralded as one of the best fighting games to ever come out.

As its name implies, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown is the last refinement of a five-year-old game. For the first time in the game's history, it finally has a golden standard across all three platforms. It took two years to make the jump from the arcades to the console, but as it turns out, the wait was well worth it.

Checking out Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown at PAX photo
Checking out Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown at PAX
by Jesse Cortez

The recent announcement of Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network during the summer of 2012 was great news to many fans in the fighting game community. The Virtua Fighter series is regarded by many to be one of the most balanced and hardcore fighters out there, and it garnered even more attention when Virtua Fighter 5 champion Fuudo took the championship in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition at EVO this year.

Final Showdown has actually existed in Japanese arcade since 2010, but there was no way for American fans to check it out besides flying around the world. Consider how surprised the PAX crowd was when the local Seattle Gameworks announced that Sega had sent over one of the Japanese cabinets for the attendees to check out.

Not only that, but our friends at iPlaywinner hosted a live stream of the game for people at home to watch. I was able to sit down with Patrick Riley, director of international product development at Sega to talk about this anticipated release.

Destructoid Review: Virtua Fighter 5 Online
by Earnest Cavalli

When Virtua Fighter 5 hit the PlayStation 3 earlier this year, everyone loved it. On a system lacking in quality software, it was hailed as the second coming of Christ (albeit, Christ with a wicked left hook and lightning fast snap-kick). The only issue anyone could seem to find with it is that in an era when absolutely everything, from refrigerators to third-world countries, is connected to the Internet, VF5 had no online multiplayer.

Sega, never one to shirk responsibility when there's the opportunity for tons of cash to be made, has amended that issue with the Xbox 360 Virtua Fighter 5 reissue, even going so far as to advertise the addition with a new subtitle. The only question now is: how did the rest of the game fare during the port?

Hit the jump to find out.
