Going all in: Defiance is Syfy and Trion's biggest gamble photo
Going all in: Defiance is Syfy and Trion's biggest gamble

[For a glimpse at Defiance (the game) and its new PvP modes, check out our recent preview and return here for a look at the TV series. Also, MEBTWK]

“Four years ago, both we and Syfy knew we were going to do this, but we were like, ‘How the hell are we going to do this?’”

Rob Hill, senior producer at Trion Worlds, is standing on the terrace of the Park Hyatt hotel in Toronto, Ontario. The sky is overcast and the air is freezing. This was supposed to be Defiance’s big coming out party, but it’s starting to feel like a reminder that winter is coming. That time of year when TV productions in Toronto come to a halt and game designers work more than sleep to make a spring release happen. One can say, Defiance is getting it from both ends.

Depending on who you ask, Defiance is a desperate grasp at keeping science-fiction relevant or a glimpse at the future of the genre. One thing that can’t be argued is that Defiance is the most ambitious project that both Syfy and Trion Worlds have undertaken.

The wasteland of Fallout may be impressive in terms of scale and detail, but I always feel a bit lonely in it. Defiance is such a world, but it’s one constantly shared with other players. At any time, your clan may show up and help out on a mission or you may come across a 100+ player competitive match in the middle of a map.

Defiance is an MMO but it’s one unlike any other, though it suffers from some familiar problems in its current state.

Preview: End of Nations is still free, and still fun
by Abel Girmay

When I first saw End of Nations last year, I was one part intrigued, one part skeptical, and all together hoping that the promise of a massively multiplayer real-time strategy game would pan out.

Since then, we at Destructoid have seen End of Nations a number of times, and then some. This go around, there was nothing new shown per se, just a few additions to existing mechanics. But what was on display here continues to impress.

Ten things to know about Defiance photo
Ten things to know about Defiance
by Jayson Napolitano

Defiance is SyFy and Trion Worlds’ venture that breaks new ground by simultaneously developing a television series and videogame within the same universe, and even sharing a few characters between the two. We were only given a sneak peek of the television series here at San Diego Comic-Con with a brief trailer, but we were able to spend a lot of time with the Trion Worlds-developed MMO, speaking with Nick Beliaff, vice president of development, and Ron Hill, senior producer, about the game.

We gathered a lot of information about the game’s intriguing story, San Francisco and Bay Area setting, dynamic in-game events, music, and gameplay. If you’re interested in this game or are looking for more details about the world of Defiance, check this out in conjunction with our hands-on preview from a couple months back.

E3: Gorgeous free-to-play shooting all over your Warface photo
E3: Gorgeous free-to-play shooting all over your Warface
by Ryan Perez

To say that a lot of free-to-play games were at the show this year would be an understatement. Though they weren't all of the same genre, I saw a holy God crap-ton of F2P titles everywhere.

This model is spreading like a wildfire, and seems to be the payment plan of choice when it comes to online multiplayer PC titles. The appeal of micro-transactions to games that feature a continuous supply of content is irrefutable, and it's safe to assume that fun is indeed becoming free, in this industry that has, more or less, made fun its sole source of appeal.

And now, after seeing the beautiful Warface, it's safe to say that "quality" is no longer a large concern for the free-to-play market. This game is not only the best-looking F2P game thus far, but it was also one of the most visually appealing titles at the show.
