Destructoid's most wanted PlayStation 3 games of 2012
by Kyle MacGregor

The past year has been an interesting one for Sony. The PlayStation 3 finally began to hit its stride, a new portable finally emerged, and an "unauthorized intrusion" resulted in a month-long network outage. That major pothole aside, there have been much brighter moments and many great games since then.

But that's enough reflection for now. It's time to focus on what the future has in store. All week long, the Destructoid Staff will be sharing our picks for some of the most wanted titles of the next year. Yesterday, you saw Hamza's and Conrad's choices for the Xbox 360. Today, Samit Sarkar and I are here to share our most anticipated PlayStation 3 titles of 2012.

GameStop apologizes for Last Guardian 'cancellation' photo
GameStop apologizes for Last Guardian 'cancellation'
by Jim Sterling

Yesterday, GameStop started calling anybody who preordered The Last Guardian to tell them that the long-awaited Team ICO game had been cancelled. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth, but Sony was able to quash the rumor pretty swiftly. Today, GameStop has apologized for upsetting its customers.

"The Last Guardian has not been cancelled by Sony as we incorrectly stated in an automated call to reservation customers," said the retailer. "Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system. The Last Guardian will be reinstated for pre-order when a firm launch date is known."

Down here in the South, we were rocked by hurricane-class winds due to the huge collective sigh of relief from gamers when it turned out GameStop was wrong. I would like the retailer to come fix my windows now, please.

Our Ico/Shadow of the Colossus bonus footage sneak peek photo
Our Ico/Shadow of the Colossus bonus footage sneak peek
by Dale North

The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection is packed with bonus video content that is sure to thrill fans of either or both games. After seeing it all I'd say that the video content alone is worth the price of entry! You'll have to get your own copy of the collection to see it all, but I am able to share a clip of some choice sections with you.

I really enjoyed the double feature on both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. The creators go all out, laying out the juicy details of the development stage of both games. You're treated to the best tidbits of information, all laced with updated HD footage from both titles. Our clip gives a bit the team talking about the work it took to update these games to be HD PS3 titles. The examples will give you a good feel for all of the work that went into updating these classics.

In the included roundtable discussion fans get really neat details on all Team Ico titles. In this I learned how all the original creators went to the same college, or how they Ueda didn't want to make a "game-y" game with Ico, and that's why they brought in people that weren't necessarily game makers. There's a lot of talk about their fears of Ico not working as a game, which was surprising. I love that the US Ico box art came up. Not everyone loved it, as you'll see in the above clip.

As a fan, the included early concept footage clips were thrill to see. For Shadow, I was surprised to see some of the early forms for the colossi -- they've come a long way since this early start. Ico early footage is also on the disc, giving us a taste of Ueda's earliest ideas. For our clip you'll get a rare look at Nico, a game that was never made. Imagine Shadow of the Colossus, but as an online title, and you'll have some idea of what they were thinking.

Finally, there's a bit of talk about Team Ico's next game, The Last Guardian. In the clip you'll learn how the Guardian's strange mix of household pets came together. I was moved after watching the entire segment. You'll definitely want to see the rest of this.

The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection goes on sale tomorrow!

Review: The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection photo
Review: The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection
by Dale North

Two of the finest PlayStation 2 titles I know of were created by the same team. Both Shadow of the Colossus and Ico were crafted by the creative minds at Team Ico, a group that is slow to release games, but makes masterpieces each time. I hold both in such high regard that I've been known to force people to play them. One friend of mine in particular came to my city for a short visit not too long ago. I insisted that he play Shadow of the Colossus, and I monitored his progress throughout, clearly stating that he was forbidden from doing anything else until he completed what I consider to be one of my favorite games of all time. If he didn't love it, at least he knew better than to tell me otherwise.

Obviously I was excited to hear that both games would appear on one compilation, remastered in high definition on the PlayStation 3. My heart wants to say that the original PS2 titles were perfect, but the game critic in me knows better. While both games are still among the most expressive, artful and influential titles ever created, they had their issues. Even this die-hard fan will admit that there were hardware limitations, graphical glitches, low frame rates and some control issues. So again, news of a HD remaster for PS3 was a dream come true for me.

Yes, a dream has come true. I said that. I think you know where this is going.
