Steamworld Dig is better on the Wii U

Acaratus brings robots onto the tactical RPG battlefield

There is something about turn-based battles on a square grid that always seems to captivate me. Taking that idea out of the generic fantasy setting garners bonus points for me too. Granted, Acaratus is described to take plac...

Vertiginous Golf brings steampunk mini-golf to Steam Early Access

Here's a game I can get behind. Vertiginous Golf  is, "a first-person exploratory mini-golf" title, set in a dystopian steampunk world. I'm sure that world is interesting, but it's the mini-golf I'm excited about. Those...

The Chaos Engine is coming back with a 'restoration'

My first reaction to this annoyingly teaserish trailer for The Chaos Engine was, "Holy eff! They're remaking The Chaos Engine!" That is not quite what's happening here -- this is a "restoration" of the classic top-down co-op...

The Order: 1866 announced for Playstation 4

Ready at Dawn Studios showed off a trailer for a new IP for the PlayStation 4, called The Order: 1866. While the trailer didn't show a lot, it did show enough to get me excited. It's a Victorian-era setting with lots of awes...

Avalanche Studios has a steampunk-style game on hold

Will there be another Just Cause? Probably. I mean, if there's any justice, yes. But those recent pictures Avalanche Studios founder Christofer Sundberg put out on Twitter aren't it. When Edge pressed him on the matter, he ca...

Oh boy! Dishonored has five different pre-order bonuses

You know, I'm getting quite tired of all these exclusive pre-orders at every single retailer for every new game that comes out. It becomes a hassle if you pick a crappy one, because then you have to wait a couple months to pu...

Few games actually require no introduction, and this is certainly one of them. This long-winded, turn-based strategy series has persistently delved deep into the core of human history, and what it takes for a nation to start, grow and die. While Civilization is a game, first and foremost, you'd be hard-pressed to find a fan denying that Civ provides a deep look at the core mechanics of cultural development.

Like any well-made expansion, Gods & Kings aims to add to what the series is already praised for. Religion and espionage have always been a large part of the franchise, and Firaxis Games listened to the cries of their fans after excluding it from Civilization V. Now, they're bringing it back, new and improved, along with fun little addition that sci-fi fans are sure to love: alternative history.

That's right, Civilization V: Gods & Kings features steam punk technology.

Locked up for a crime you did not commit, and accused of killing the empress you swore to protect, you are left to rot in prison for your unjust conviction. Your only saving grace is an amoral mystical being who endows you with special powers, allowing you to make your escape.

Upon emerging from the hellhole you've been caged in, you find the world outside enslaved by the totalitarian government that has seized power, and to make matters worse, there is a deadly plague spreading around your once beloved city. Yeah, I'd be pissed too.

Such is the plight of Corvo, a bodyguard-turned-supernatural assassin in Dishonored. Coming from the minds at Arkane Studios, there is a lot of talent behind this project. Key players from the development of such classics as Deus Ex, Thief: Deadly Shadows, and Half-Life 2 are just some of the hands on deck. You don't have to be the greatest gaming buff to respect the pedigree brought to the table.
