Dumb Idiot Ideas: Spider-Man Video Review

Max and I set out to review The Amazing Spider-Man 2 videogame. But, we didn't receive a review copy, forcing us to instead review a Spider-Man themed board game Max picked up at a weird Chinese shop.

Spider-Man games used to rule the roost when it came to licensed comic book properties. Spidey led the way in fact on the NES, and continued his streak into the SNES with classic brawlers like Separation Anxiety and Maximum Carnage, and one of my personal favorites -- the 1995 cartoon adaptation.

But ever since 2004's Spider-Man 2, developers have struggled to recapture the magic of what it means to swing about in 3D. While I saw a lot of hope in the first Amazing Spider-Man game, there's been an unfortunate drop in quality the second time around.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 doesn't look half bad

It's hard to look at what Rocksteady has done with Batman and not want the same treatment for Spider-Man. For better or worse, long-time developer Beenox has once again taken charge, this time for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a...

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game looks the same as the first, only shinier

Here's Max to cap off the week of videogame news. He claims his laptop battery is almost out of juice but I think he just wanted to get the weekend started early. I'd have done the same thing.

The new Thief and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, two games that have experienced their fair share of criticism from fans of those properties, got the preview treatment. We also saw trailers for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Elder Scrolls Online's packed voice cast, and Jazzpunk. That last one will rank among the year's best game trailers, mark my words. Whoa.

More than anything, I'm pleased to hear that Max agrees with me about the stupidity of the name "The Golf Club." Take that, Steven! And bring your puns with you.

Review: The Amazing Spider-Man

When there's a new movie on the horizon, Activision's usually on call to bring us the obligatory videogame tie-in. As is the creed of the obligatory videogame tie-in, the product is rushed, slapdash, visually unimpressive, and interactively vapid. It is the irrefutable law of such licensed products. It is a law you do not break.

Unless you're The Amazing Spider-Man which, despite everything going against it, and in the face of gameplay systems ripped wholesale from a rival licensed game, actually manages to be quite good.
