There's plenty of death in this hour-long The Evil Within video

Based on this hour-long play session of The Evil Within, I'm not expecting to be particularly scared by the game, but I am expecting to die quite a few times. Given its limited checkpoints, the fear of failure and having to ...

Which of these alternate The Evil Within covers do you like best?

I tend to prefer alternate game cover art over the "real" thing and The Evil Within is no exception. Publisher Bethesda has three covers for us to vote on and whichever piece wins will be used on the inside sleeve for the lau...

The Evil Within jump starts the scares a week earlier than planned

If indecision frightens you, then there's plenty to be scared of when it comes to The Evil Within. Originally slated for an August release, Bethesda pushed it back to October 21. Now that we're a bit closer to that window, th...

Oh, the horror! The Evil Within delayed two months

The Evil Within is staying hidden in the shadows a little bit longer than anticipated. However, there aren't any surprise jump scares here; we know exactly when to expect it. Originally slated for a August 26 release, Be...

The Evil Within seems like it forgot the 'horror' in 'pure survival horror' photo
The Evil Within seems like it forgot the 'horror' in 'pure survival horror'

All too often, survival horror titles perform poorly in some areas, but it's somehow acceptable because that's the trade-off for being survival horror. If the experience is tense and scary, it seems like everything else is forgivable. That's a very important "if" however, because if it doesn't deliver on the horror front, you're suddenly left with a game that just performs poorly.

After having almost two hours of hands-on time with The Evil Within, it's perilously close to falling into this category.

As a disclaimer of sorts, I was thrust into two levels at varying points of the story. Chapter 4 and Chapter 8 were the two sections shown, and both were ineffective at providing any scares, any true adrenaline-pumping moments, or really anything even noteworthy. For what it's worth, maybe I was missing the context of the previous parts of the game that might give others an overarching sense of fear. As isolated incidents, they were just dull.

The Evil Within isn't looking very evil so far photo
The Evil Within isn't looking very evil so far
by Dale North

A behind-closed-doors play session for upcoming survival horror game The Evil Within wasn't as evil as I hoped it would be. I still have high hopes for the next game from Resident Evil vet Shinji Mikami and his new studio, Tango Gameworks, but the two gameplay sessions I saw today at PAX East seemed to draw a bit too much on his past works, and not enough on the freaky stuff.

Some of the imagery from the new trailer had my hopes up, but we didn't see much of that in our demo today.

God Hand and Vanquish designer is a farmer now

Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil, The Evil Within) chose Hiroki Kato to direct Resident Evil Code: Veronica. Kato did not continue getting attached to projects as a director, however, though he did end up as a designer on God Han...

Mikami: It's become harder to make players afraid

I've got high hopes for Tango Gameworks' The Evil Within. It's the return of Shinji Mikami and, hopefully, big-budget survival horror. Games like Outlast have scared us silly, but it's also possible to point to series like De...

This screenshot from The Evil Within is a bad idea

Did you know that this guy's name is Boxman? I wasn't aware until today. He's been featured prominently in Bethesda's promotion of The Evil Within so far, which has me wondering if the intent is for him to become the title's ...

12 minutes of pure horror with The Evil Within photo
12 minutes of pure horror with The Evil Within
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

The Evil Within is going to be hopefully a return to the classic survival horror games we grew up with. That was my thoughts when I first saw the opening act to the game prior to E3 this year.  Now you can see what Isaw as Bethesda has released the prologue in video form. It's a quick version of what I saw, as this is trying to capture all the high points.

What you're not seeing or getting a taste for is the pure tension the game offers. That's something you're going to have to experience first hand when it's released

Mikami wants to bring back horror focus for Evil Within

Few game genres bring about the kind of debate over terminology that horror does. Or maybe it only feels that way because it's the one I can't turn away from when the insults start flying. It took no time at all for folks to ...

Horrific The Evil Within screenshots show promise
