Miyamoto talks about attacking eyeballs in Pikmin 3

Nintendo continues to show that they don't give a rat's ass about following trends, and I think it's fantastic. While Capcom is working to make the next Dead Rising appeal to the Call of Duty fanbase and Namco Bandai wants t...

Miyamoto & Reggie hosting E3 showcase at Nintendo booth
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Nintendo won't be hosting a traditional E3 press conference as in years past. Instead the company intends to host smaller events focused on the software lineup for the US market. This we knew, but we were left to wonder what exactly they were going to do.

Well now we know as Nintendo has just announced that they'll be hosting a Come Play With Us @ The Wii U Software Showcase event at their E3 booth. Nintendo of America President & COO Reggie Fils-Aime and Shigeru Miyamoto will both be giving presentations, after which the press will get to play the upcoming lineup "through a unique hands-on time experience" with the games at Nintendo's booth before the show floor opens to all.

The event takes place on June 11, with opening remarks beginning at 10:30AM. No word if this will be livestreamed, but at the very least we will be live-blogging the event right here on Destructoid.

Shigeru Miyamoto believes in a Wii U future photo
Shigeru Miyamoto believes in a Wii U future

Shigeru Miyamoto is a busy little beaver, isn't he? First a chat with GameSpot, and now a two-part interview with Time? Where does he find the energy? That's why I'm convinced that the man will outlive us all.

I'm honestly a little disappointed with the youthful Nintendo elf's Time conversation, as it is nowhere near as candid or as enlightening as his GameSpot session. Nonetheless, it's always a treat to be able to peek into that wonderland of a brain.

He addresses the Wii U's slow OS performance: "We had multiple different teams working on multiple different segments of the hardware and its features simultaneously. Certainly we'd had experience with that type of development designing the 3DS, but with Wii U the scope of the project was far beyond our development of the 3DS hardware. And with many of those features, you don’t get a true sense for how they interact or where the advantages and disadvantages lie within the broader framework until you're able to bring all the components together into a single unified system." Once the big April update arrives, however, Miyamoto expects everyone will have a far more convenient experience.

Shigeru Miyamoto feels creatively satisfied photo
Shigeru Miyamoto feels creatively satisfied
by Tony Ponce

Perennial star child Shigeru Miyamoto has had an illustrious career, no doubt about that. From creating Donkey Kong to busting on stage with Link's sword and shield equipped, he has cemented himself as one of the most influential figures in all of gaming. So even though it appears that most of the projects he's involved in lately are rooted in established Nintendo franchises, he still finds opportunities to flex his creativity.

In an interview with GameSpot, the Nintendo EAD manager discusses his happiness in addition to the upcoming games lineup. He's quite candid in some of his responses, especially concerning the Pikmin 3's use of Wii U functions: "When I create a game, I don't necessarily always try to approach it from the idea of leveraging every feature or every ability of that new piece of hardware. In the case of Pikmin in particular, the approach that we took was really less of an approach of how can we [...] take advantage of what the Wii U is doing, per se, and instead how can we take what was that Pikmin experience and really make it a deeper experience for players."

That right there ought to be drilled into the heads of any developer hoping to work on Nintendo hardware. Miyamoto himself says you shouldn't feel forced to use every little gadget or doodad available to you, rather only using them to enhance an already conceived gameplay idea. You'd think that would be common knowledge by now.
