Seduce Me is only on our radar because it was developed by folks who worked on the Triple-A Killzone franchise, and later denied a place on Steam's Greenlight project. We likely wouldn't have noticed it, much less be reviewing it, had Valve not opted to shut it out. But here we are.
There are myriad reasons that gamers of all stripes should support a game like Seduce Me. Games should be free to tastefully tackle sex as a subject without being punished commercially or by culture at large. As an effective outlet for base urges, games should be able to do more than violence and still be commercially successful. An "AO" rating from the ESRB shouldn't be a kiss of death. The culture at large should be less shy about one of the most natural human activities. The list goes on.
Unfortunately, for gamers and for developer No Reply, Seduce Me is not the game that will do the things above.
If tech reporters seem excited today about the prospect of Project Shield, a new handheld PC gaming console by Nvidia, it’s probably because they are at CES where there is little else to be excited about within the confines of gaming. Perhaps they’d be better served by moseying on down to the Adult Entertainment Expo to pick up one of the those state of the art crank-operated, Bluetooth-enabled Fleshlights. It’s times like this that make me wish we lived in a world where Razer’s Switchblade, the talk of last year’s CES, had been released and bombed commercially so I could simply point at some news article and say “Look! I made hyperlink. I are smart.”
Instead, the Switchblade is still awaiting its retail release (sometime in Q2 Never), leaving game/tech journalists to praise it, gamers to doubt it, and developers to half-heartedly endorse it -- the kind of endorsement you would give Pauly Shore if you’d been sent five free Pauly Shore’s to use as you please. Despite not having the Switchblade’s retail performance, there is a history to awkward, expensive handheld gaming PCs that is best summoned on a day like today #slownewsday.
Seduce Me won't be releasing on Steam, but perhaps it's not all bad. When the self-described "erotic strategy game" was taken down from Steam Greenlight, a bunch of outlets covered the removal, calling attention to a title we might have otherwise overlooked. It is available now for PC/Mac directly from No Reply Games, should you be in the market for this sort of thing.
The developers behind Seduce Me, Andrejs Skuja and Miriam Bellard, both used to work at Killzone maker Guerrilla Games. Just goes to show that you can't be too quick to judge based on first impressions. While I have no personal interest in this game, I'm glad to see the pair branch out to genuinely work on a genre that isn't exactly known for its excellence.
