SOE's internal games will all use PlanetSide 2's engine

Even if you haven't played PlanetSide 2, the sheer scale of it all matched with the visual fidelity is fairly impressive. Of course, it helps that there is a good game to back up the MMO's looks. The engine that made PS2 ...

Bullet Run closes up shop because no one played it

I actually played the free-to-play Bullet Run at E3. Oh, how naive I was back then. If you read the article, you'll see that I actually sorta enjoyed playing the game on the show floor.  Silly me. When it was r...

All hail PlanetSide 2's Vanu Sovereignty!

It's no secret that Vanu Sovereignty is the best faction in PlanetSide 2. I mean c'mon, they're purple and have energy weapons. You were aware that purple is the color of royalty, right? Meanwhile, red and black are colors a...

Latest PlanetSide 2 trailer asks you one simple question

Well, the new PlanetSide 2 trailer started out well enough. I mean, it showed off some mechs, tanks, and there was even a helicopter sighting. Alright PlanetSide 2, you have my attention. "CAN YOUR FPS DO THIS?," i...

PlanetSide 2 beta drawing to a close

With the launch of PlanetSide 2 close enough so that I can smell it, the beta will lamentably cease on Friday. Don't fret, however, as that's three days of large-scale combat left, and then on November 20 the game itself will...

Black Widow Company featured in new PlanetSide 2 trailer

PlanetSide 2 has a new trailer today, and it's all about Black Widow Company. Who are they? Beats me, but they sure do know how to put on a show. I can't really tell what was going on in the video most of the time, but ...

PlanetSide 2 first game to feature Twitch integration photo
PlanetSide 2 first game to feature Twitch integration
by Brett Zeidler

I can remember ever since I discovered the magic of Xbox Live back in 2004, I always thought, "Man, wouldn't it be cool if my friends could just watch me play games just by clicking on my name or something?" Well, it appears we're one step closer to that dream, as Sony Online Entertainment has announced that PlanetSide 2 will be the first title ever to feature in-game streaming integration with Twitch.

Beginning this weekend (for beta players), all you have to do is click a button and you'll be live! I can't stress enough how awesome this is. I do a weekly live show on Dtoid.TV every Saturday, and streaming just PC games is a pain in the ass as is. I haven't even made it to streaming console games yet. Between the cost of the streaming software, capture box, and simply making it run smoothly is a perfect storm of hassles. If this works flawlessly, hopefully more most games from now on support this feature.

Impressions: DC Universe Online: Hand of Fate photo
Impressions: DC Universe Online: Hand of Fate
by Fraser Brown

Earlier this week, I got to take a stroll through Gotham and Metropolis with DC Universe Online's creative director, Jens Andersen. Being shown off was the latest DLC, Hand of Fate, which introduces a whole bunch of new PvE and PvP content including utility belt upgrades, new Operations, and some additional Legends characters.

I donned my fetching tights, shrugged off the disappointment at not being able to use a flying hero, and got entirely lost in the Justice League's massive Watchtower. It doesn't matter how often I play the game, that place is still a bloody maze. Thankfully, I had a guide this time.

Preview: PlanetSide 2 brings depth to match the scale photo
Preview: PlanetSide 2 brings depth to match the scale
by Abel Girmay

When Hamza saw PlanetSide 2 at gamescom, he wet his pants a little from the excitement of it all. Truly, the scope is impressive: the size of the maps are mind boggling and 2,000 players fighting at once is a sight to behold.

As great as scale can be for a game like this, what caught my eye most was the exhaustive depth Sony Online is bringing with the moment-to-moment gameplay.

gamescom: PlanetSide 2 blew my mind photo
gamescom: PlanetSide 2 blew my mind

This might sound weird, but the biggest thing that impressed me about PlanetSide 2 was the map. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay and all that's on offer is pretty great. But the scale of everything is just insane when I was taking a look at the map. You have games like Battlefield gloating about their huge maps (and they are), but you can fit several of their biggest maps into just one of PlanetSide 2's map easily.

Part of having huge maps also means having a ton of players fighting, and in this case you're going to have thousands and thousand of people playing on a server going at it on foot, in tanks, and in the air all the time fighting for objective points all over the map. I was shown an overhead map view during gamescom where I could see all the action was taking place at any point, and see who is in control of what territory that's constantly shifting hands. PlanetSide 2 features three playable teams, and the goal is to dominate the map.
