The best and worst games of the week - New year new games

It's January and that means it's time to catch up on all the hot new video games we found tucked underneath our Christmas trees last year. For us at Destructioid that also means catching up on some reviews too. So without further adieu here is the best and worst games of the week... well actually of the month so far. I had a little catching up to do myself.

On the second week of December Destructoid's reviews brought me, one sweet RPG called Ys.

Okay, that's about as far as I'm going with turning this weeks review round-up into some sort of Christmas jingle. But feel free to keep the lyrics going in the comments below.

As for the rest of the reviews... well you can tell it's the second week of the last month of the year. The releases are slowing up, to keep the holiday blockbusters at the top of everyone's Christmas lists, but there's till some fun to be had -- especially on the PC side of things.

Oh and Peggle 2 is here! Who doesn't love pachinko on Ecstasy?

Oh December! You are by far my favorite month of the year, and not just because it's Christmas and my birthday. Your winter slumber in the games department allows me the leisure of checking my backlog list twice and knocking off some of those naughty titles I've been neglecting.

I'm not sure how the rest of the month is going to pan out for you, but you did deliver us another phenomenal racing title with Sony's Gran Turismo 6. And I'm really not sure how any one human can handle this, Need for Speed: Rivals, F1 2013, and Forza 5... but we all know Destructoid's racing guru, Mr. Dale "don't call me Peter" North has been gunning it full throttle the last few months. I think it's time for cruise control.

Now on to the week in reviews!

The best and worst games of the week - Game of the Month

Thank goodness November is finally over. It was a hectic month -- that will go down in gaming history as one of the greatest ever -- thanks, in no part, to the launch of two brand spanking new consoles from both Sony and Microsoft.

There was also the usual flood of major releases primed for the holiday madness like Tearaway, Forza Motorsport 5, Killzone: Shadow Fall, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Call of Duty: Ghosts.

But more importantly there was one title that grabbed the attention of the Destructoid staff more than any other game this month and perhaps is just the kick a certain Nintendo console needs to sell like hotcakes this winter season.

The best and worst games of the week - Xbox One is here!

After last week's PlayStation 4 review domination, Microsoft finally got it's chance to strut its stuff with the Xbox One. Forza Motorsports 5, Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, Crimson Dragon, Ryse, and a handful of other exclusive titles flooded our pages this week. But regardless of all the Xbox One hype, their games were far from the biggest titles of the week.

Two titles, fin fact, garnered our coveted 10 out of 10 score. Nintendo's Super Mario 3D World and from Little Big Planer creators, Media Molecule, Tearaway. If you've been holding out on either the Wii U or PS Vita, you may have just found your first two must have system-selling titles of the year.

The Playstation 4 dominated this weeks review schedule and rightfully so. Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, Resogun, and Contrast dominated our postings -- and as of last night my Facebook wall (please turn off your notifications friends) -- but they were not the only games worth talking about this week.

Perhaps the biggest individual release of the week was Nintendo's latest in The Legend Zelda franchise, A Link Between Worlds. It was by far our most popular story of the week with tons of amazing comments. There was also the new Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus and the long awaited DLC to BioShock Infinite that brought us back to Rapture: Burial at Sea Episode One.

All in all it was a pretty exciting weeks for games. This year is quickly coming to an end, but we still have the Xbox One's looming release and one of the Destructoid's staff's most anticipated titles Super Mario 3D World right around the corner.

The best and worst games of the week

Reviews Elsewhere: Aliens: Colonial Marines

The verdict is in for Aliens: Colonial Marines, and it's not pretty. Even having beaten the campaign over a week ago, I'm still in a hazy shock over just how bad it was, even by licensed game standards. Of course, I've made i...
