Pray at the altar of NES chiptune metal with Diad

Chiptunes are cool and all, but you know me -- I gotta have that little extra edge. When chip music emulates face-melting metal, it's one of the nine most beautiful things in the world (maybe some day I'll tell you what the o...

Chiptunes = WTFLOL!? Non-chip covers of chip jams photo
Chiptunes = WTFLOL!? Non-chip covers of chip jams
by Tony Ponce

[Update: The album is live! Hit up the Bandcamp page to get your free jams!]

If you are a big chiptune nut, you've probably heard me make mention of "Chiptunes = WIN," a chip appreciation group that has released three free collections of original chiptune music over the past year: the original Chiptunes = WIN, ChipWIN Expansion Pack, and chipWINter. Many artists were assembled to make these projects a reality, and fearless ChipWIN leader Brandon Hood couldn't be more pleased with the reception. I mean, it's literally hours of awesome bleeps and bloops. Who wouldn't be excited by this stuff?

The next little treat in the pipeline is Chiptunes = WTFLOL, a six-track EP set to be released after the listening party on 8bitX's "8 Bit Power Hour," starting right now at 8:00 PM EST which is now over. In a wild twist, this album does not feature any chiptunes. Rather, six popular videogame music arrangers have selected six tracks from the past three ChipWIN releases to cover in their own signature styles.

The arrangers include Final Fantasy cover band The World Is Square, The OneUps' Tim Yarbrough, Jameson Sutton, VikingGuitar, Metroid Metal's Stemage, and post-rock Zelda album performer Cory Johnson. Nice spread there, no? Go cop it at the link below!

Link goes metal in Ledjent of Zelda photo
Link goes metal in Ledjent of Zelda
by Tony Ponce

From Ryan "Mega Beardo" Postlethwait, the man who brought us the Castlevania concept album Belmont, comes a modern metal re-imagining of the original NES Zelda soundtrack. At a mere four tracks in length, Ledjent of Zelda just pops in, rocks your face, then zips out the side door like a phantom in the night. The digital version is free, but you can choose to be generous and spring for the $5 physical album if you wanna.

I would like to point out Beardo's amazing NES guitar. I've seen consoles converted into guitars before -- MegaDriver, anyone? -- and there's always a certain tacky hotness about them. It's like, you wouldn't expect sound to actually come out of one of those things, but it does! How does that happen? Voodoo magic? A pact with Satan?

Whatevs. I can dig it!

Get milky with OC ReMix's Kirby Super Star album photo
Get milky with OC ReMix's Kirby Super Star album

How can I help you, King DeDeDe?
I NEED A MONSTAH TO CLOBBER DAT DERE KIR-BEH!

Game music arrangement repository OverClocked ReMix has released Milky Way Wishes: A Kirby Super Star Tribute, a project that has spent a dizzying eight years in production. I can only guess at what kinds of behind-the-scenes shenanigans caused such a massive delay, but love for the Super Nintendo classic carried the team through.

Unlike the disgustingly monstrous multi-disc collections like Mega Man X: Maverick Rising or the recent Donkey Kong Country 3: Double the Trouble!, Milky Way Wishes is a respectable 23 tracks in length, spanning all manner of genres from chiptune to folk music. You can download it for free directly from the album's page, or you can mind OCR's precious bandwidth and torrent the pink puffball. The power is yours!

The top ten Contra songs OF ALL TIME photo
The top ten Contra songs OF ALL TIME
by Tony Ponce

Castlevania. Mega Man. And finally, Contra. With this, my holy trinity is complete.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the greatest run and gun videogame series ever, Allistair Pinsof ranked the top five Contra games. But what is a game without a kickass soundtrack to back it up? Nothing, that's what!

Contra games are balls hard, so the music needs to fill you with the strength to tackle impossible odds without fear or hesitation. From electronica to hard rock to symphonic orchestrations, every note imbues you with confidence -- and maybe a little bit of bravado as well.

Get ready to attack aggressively with the top ten Contra songs of all time!

Last year's chiptune album Preschtale gets remixed, baby photo
Last year's chiptune album Preschtale gets remixed, baby
by Tony Ponce

A year ago, chiptune artist C-jeff produced a very spiffy chip album entitled Preschtale. The seven-track release was inspired by several progressive rock bands, and the result was very "space-y," for lack of a better word.

The album has inspired a bunch of other musicians in turn in the form of Preschtale Variations. A much more expansive 16 tracks in length, Preschtale Variations features many guests reworking C-jeff's original material in a variety of styles like acoustic and electronica. You might even recognize some of the contributors, which include Shnabubula and Metroid Metal's Stemage.

You can download the album for free, so get to it!
