PlanetSide 2 beta drawing to a close

With the launch of PlanetSide 2 close enough so that I can smell it, the beta will lamentably cease on Friday. Don't fret, however, as that's three days of large-scale combat left, and then on November 20 the game itself will...

gamescom: PlanetSide 2 blew my mind photo
gamescom: PlanetSide 2 blew my mind
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

This might sound weird, but the biggest thing that impressed me about PlanetSide 2 was the map. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay and all that's on offer is pretty great. But the scale of everything is just insane when I was taking a look at the map. You have games like Battlefield gloating about their huge maps (and they are), but you can fit several of their biggest maps into just one of PlanetSide 2's map easily.

Part of having huge maps also means having a ton of players fighting, and in this case you're going to have thousands and thousand of people playing on a server going at it on foot, in tanks, and in the air all the time fighting for objective points all over the map. I was shown an overhead map view during gamescom where I could see all the action was taking place at any point, and see who is in control of what territory that's constantly shifting hands. PlanetSide 2 features three playable teams, and the goal is to dominate the map.

E3: Free-to-play PlanetSide 2 impressed us photo
E3: Free-to-play PlanetSide 2 impressed us
by Daniel Starkey

Ryan Perez, Patrick Hancock, and I all got about 30 minutes of hands-on time with PlanetSide 2 earlier today. As a free-to-play MMOFPS from Sony Online Entertainment, PlanetSide 2 is set to enter a rapidly crowding market. Where they hope to break away from the pack, however, is with big set-pieces in a dynamic, resource-focused game.

Soon-to-be competitor Firefall, for example, focuses on cooperative, community-building play. PlanetSide 2, by contrast, is closer to a standard FPS with massive set-pieces. These include huge maps that span a variety of environments including canyons, deserts, forests, and plains that are all part of the same space. Players will battle across each of these environments, setting up bases and collecting resources that people on the frontline can use to deploy tanks, transports, and aircraft.

GDC: Conquering worlds for free in PlanetSide 2 photo
GDC: Conquering worlds for free in PlanetSide 2
by Ryan Perez

First-person shooters lend themselves incredibly well to vast, open environments, so it's almost criminal that we don't have more games taking that to the level the original PlanetSide did. A normal session of gameplay involved me driving my stealth four-wheeler to the nearest battle, and then sneaking up on unsuspecting snipers as they assassinated my fellow Vanu soldiers from the hills. No points, no timers, and no barriers were involved ... only hundreds of players, fighting for control over a particular base.

When PlanetSide 2 was announced, I first thought to myself, "Thank Christ Sony Online Entertainment is actually doing something." Then I fist-pumped in excitement when I heard it was a sequel to a game I enjoyed a great deal in high school, and was of a genre that I wished would have taken off, but didn't: the MMOFPS.

Then today, at a hands-off preview of PlanetSide 2, they told me the game is going to be free to play. So, after having now seen this sweet-looking game in action, and knowing that my finances (or lack thereof) are no longer a factor, I'm pretty sure this game is 100% confirmed to be a part of my future.
