As with its brethren in the Ultimate Ninja Storm series, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3's approach to depicting super-powered ninja action is best described as a bit "Hollywood," with all pros and cons that such a descriptor might attach.

Indeed, like a stereotypical Hollywood adaptation of some geek-favorite franchise, Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 is bigger, glitzier, faster, louder, and more colorful than its manga source, but it's also simpler, shallower, and even a tad sanitized.

Nevertheless, it, like its peers, remains a grand spectacle, capturing the best in anime excess and standing tall as one of the few, proud proofs that it is in fact possible to make a triple-A "anime game."

Review: Naruto Powerful Shippuden photo
Review: Naruto Powerful Shippuden

Naruto fighting games tend to follow a specific formula. The console versions of the Shippuden series have been some of the best fighting games in the franchise, but the content hasn't really been super fresh, as it follows the familiar storyline of the television series.

While the games are ever improving on the home consoles, the portable systems haven't been given as much love. Enter Powerful Shippuden, a unique take on the series that, for once, doesn't exactly focus on the titular hero, nor does it adapt to the standard fighting game form.

And these are actually good things.

New releases: Construction finishes on SimCity photo
New releases: Construction finishes on SimCity
by Fraser Brown

This Monday heralds a week of mayoral responsibilities and the raiding of trap-laden tombs, both of which undoubtedly require similar skill sets. As much as I'm a big fan of Ms. Croft, and it seems like her latest outing is one of her best, I'm a tad more taken with managing a crazy little city.

I'll admit that I'm still not completely sold on SimCity, however. It certainly looks lovely, but I miss my water pipes and gargantuan utopias, and so many of the design choices seem to be aimed at people who are social butterflies, when I'm more of a grumpy moth. Regardless, I'm still rather excited about its imminent release, and will be doing my best to ensure that Beardtopia is the grottiest, most unfriendly city in all the land.

On top of SimCity and Tomb Raider, there are a plethora of other new releases demanding your attention this week. Two Naruto Shippunden titles drop, saturating the colorful, super-powered ninja market; Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk gives budding herbalists something to do on the PS3, while also searching for their lost sister; The Showdown Effect jumps out of a burning building and punches a vaguely German sounding villain in the face; and the 3DS gets a new Castlevania: Lords of Shadow title

You lot are getting spoiled this week. What's tempting you the most?

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 trailer shows a lot of love

Review: Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations photo
Review: Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations

The Naruto series of games is another in a long line of fighting titles based on a popular anime series. What seems to set this series apart from the others, however, is its focus on a pick-up-and-play attitude. While many games will focus on a series' storied history (or just its story) Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations aims to streamline everything so the focus is on the gameplay itself.

This is both a good thing and a bad thing.
