I know what a game is photo
I know what a game is
by Daniel Starkey

A lot of people have been running around attacking games like Proteus or The Walking Dead; claiming that they aren’t, in fact, games. Generally speaking these people spout off random things about requiring “win states” and rules.

It’s an odd thing, but one that seems to be gaining more and more traction with those who are opposed to the swelling undercurrent of “indie” and “arthouse” games.  For better or worse, they are locked into one specific definition of what a “game” is, how it should work, etc., and while I don’t really think a global definition is necessary in the first place, their constant whining is something that I feel needs a better response than what I’ve seen floating about thus far.

David Cage is right: Violence is not essential

Earlier this week, Allistair suggested that violence is integral to immersion, that it could draw us into games that lack it even more. This was in response to a presentation given by serial pompous twit and occasio...

Storm's Adventure with Minecraft

And concluding "Playing Catch Up to the Catch Up"... You do know there are no enemies in "Peaceful Mode"? You do know the XBOX 360 version has tutorials? You do know Minecraft has sold over 9,000,000 copies? Post and abandon...post and abandon. Also, confirmed. Car bombs are in Minecraft.

No, the 49ers will win the Super Bowl due to these games

Despite Chris clamoring on about the Baltimore Ravens winning the Super Bowl, he's wrong. If you thought he was right, you should totally feel silly right now. I doesn't matter how many prayers Ray Lewis mutters or what Madde...

King's Landing recreated in Minecraft

Brace yourselves for lots of played out Game of Thrones jokes, as the new season is coming. Ok, so that last line was a joke itself, and now I feel a little dirty. What's most definitely not dirty however is this awesome recr...

Awesomenauts gets an official Creeper skin

As part of patch 1.13 for Awesomenauts, the 2D MOBA has a new skin for Clunk that models him after The Creeper from Minecraft. It's a great fit for the explosive character, and better yet, it won't cost you any money to acces...

My favorite cooking duo of Jimmy Wong and Ashley Adams have gone back to Feast of Fiction's beginnings with another tasty Minecraft dish. Their first Minecraft gig was the cake way back in episode 3; fast forward a year, and...

Minecraft: The Story of Mojang airs on Xbox Live soon
by Jordan Devore

Now that an absurd amount of Minecraft sales have happened on Xbox 360, it makes a bit more sense that the console would be home to the premier of 2 Player Production's documentary about the studio behind the hit game. Catch the trailer for it above.

Minecraft: The Story of Mojang airs this Saturday, December 22 at 8:00pm Eastern for Xbox Live Gold members, according to Major Nelson. As tends to be the case, there are restrictions based on applicable regions -- the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Portugal, Austria, France, Finland, and Sweden are good to go.

We feel your pain, Canada and everyone else excluded. If you're unwilling or unable to catch this initial free viewing, The Story of Mojang will be available for purchase on December 23.

Wow! Final Fantasy VII Midgar recreated in Minecraft

Check out this insane Final Fantasy VII Midgar map created in Minecraft we found over at Kotaku. Holy sh*t! The lighting and detail in these shots are downright scary. A few of them took me a couple of seconds to recognize, but most are instantly recognizable to any Final Fantasy freak. Where is the Golden Saucer?

Far Cry 3 gets a Minecraft twist with this free PC mod photo
Far Cry 3 gets a Minecraft twist with this free PC mod
by Jason Cabral

I'm not sure about most players, but when I hear people talk about the Far Cry series, what comes to my mind are the scenic locales, the interesting level design and the awkward massacre of zebras. In an unique marketing move, Ubisoft has decided to team up with a Minecraft mod creator to recreate the island setting and characters found in Far Cry 3.

The map will feature key locations for players to visit, as well as tools and weapons from the upcoming game. The creators have also strewn about 50 hidden Easter Eggs through out the island, for those in the mood for a scavenger hunt. Well known Minecraft aficionado Michael "Sacr3" Lambert will be creating the island, while texture artists Axel Janssen and Yohann Delcourt will be working to bring Far Cry 3's level of high-fidelity beauty into the Minecraft's 16 by 16 blocky world.

The Far Cry 3 pack will be available to download on October 26 2012 from the official Far Cry 3 website, so now would be a good time to start sharpening that pixelated Combat Knife.
