BBC Special Report: Samus and Sagat

Samus and Sagat: BBC Special Report.

Samus and Sagat take on their greatest opponent
by Jonathan Holmes

Like the initial entry of any epic trilogy, the first two episodes of Samus and Sagat worked to establish the characters. Now that we're finally into act two of the story, we can start moving into the real meat of this drama. You could consider this episode to be the Samus and Sagat equivalent to Spider-Man 2. Watch as our heroes rise up from self doubt to battle their greatest foe!

While you're at it, subscribe to our Youtube channel if you're a regular reader of our front page who enjoys our video content. For better or worse, many of our current Youtube subscribers don't seem to know that Dtoid is also a videogame website. Many of them have been awful confused since Max has moved on and more of our front page editors have moved in to the video production side of Dtoid. As always, the more you watch and share the Dtoid videos that you enjoy, the more of those videos we'll be able to make. We can't do it without your help.

Also, congratulations to Patty for winning our gif contest! You done good.

Samus and Sagat: Prepping for Street Fighter V and Super Metroid II photo
Samus and Sagat: Prepping for Street Fighter V and Super Metroid II
by Jonathan Holmes

[Update: We've gotten a lot of great entries in the gif contest! It seemed a shame to leave them out in the cold, so I've embedded the animations that never made it to the comments into the post below. I also forgot to tell you when the contest would be over. We'll stop taking entries whenever the next episode of Samus and Sagat comes out, which with any luck will be just in time for Valentine's Day. And yes, we have something special planned for that weekend. Just you wait.]

A lot of you told me that you really liked Samus and Sagat episode one. Thank you so much! Even more of you told me that you almost didn't watch the show at all because you thought it was a cartoon. Sorry about that!

To be 100% clear, Samus and Sagat is a live-action fake sitcom about Metroid's Samus Aran (Maddy Myers) and Street Fighter's Sagat (me) living as roommates. That said, we try to incorporate animation into things when we can.

Luckily, we had a really good excuse to use some fake videogame graphics in this episode. This one is about the differences between being a videogame starlet and an older, well known but not particularly popular side character from an ensemble cast. Imagine a conversation between Chun-Li and Waluigi about where their careers are going. It's like that.

Crap, now I wish I had made that show instead. Maybe next time.

This damn Morph Ball double jump in Metroid Prime

Turns out I'm rustier at Metroid Prime than I thought. I had long forgotten about this tunnel sequence in the fiery Magmoor Caverns. It's sure giving me hell. In order to reach the (entirely optional) ledge above, you have t...

I've done a lot of video series on YouTube over the years -- Teenage Pokemon, Talking to Women about Videogames, Constructoid, Sup Holmes, Art Hawk, and of course, The Dtoid Show. None of them probably would have happened if it weren't for Sundays with Sagat, an admittedly slapdash "rant" show I put together for Destructoid back in 2010. It was my first attempt at an ongoing YouTube series. For better or worse, making the show taught me a lot.

Some say that the first thing you make is always going to be your worst thing. That could very well be true in this case, though in the years that followed Sundays with Sagat, people never stopped asking for me to return as the character. Regardless whether the show itself was any good, folks seemed to like the idea of me playing the part of an out-of-shape, horribly disfigured former final boss.

If you're one of those people who's been asking for more Sagat, get ready to either be pleasantly surprised or horribly disappointed. I just got back from shooting two episodes of a new show called Samus and Sagat with Paste.com videogame editorialist/critic Maddy Myers. We'll be doing out best to roll out one episode a month, starting next week.

Maddy and I both have mountains of writing assignments glaring at us at all times, and neither of us are professional actors, so it would be best for you to temper your expectations now. One thing is for sure though, if the show is half as fun to watch as it is to make, you'll have a good time with it.

We shot two episodes plus a bonus unboxing video in a little under three hours. I would guess at least two of those three hours were spent giggling and making fun of ourselves. If we're lucky, that feeling of friendship and self-aware idiocy will be something you can share with us. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Are you getting Nintendo mash-up fatigue?

[Art by Hakuramen] Back in the 1980's, rock band Aerosmith and rap group Run DMC did a cover of Aerosmith's Walk This Way. It was an older song, but the novelty, evocative quality, and skills present in the cover made it a mu...

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate gets an amazing Samus costume photo
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate gets an amazing Samus costume
by Chris Carter

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is still coming in 2015 outside of Japan, and there's yet another Nintendo/Capcom crossover coming. A Samus costume is making an appearance, and yes, it will be coming to the western version of the game.

At this point I think Nintendo and Capcom are friends enough where the latter can just, give over the rights to Mega Man games to the former? I mean, think about it. Capcom can pull a George Lucas and retain merchandise rights. Nintendo can make great games and Capcom can still collect -- do a five to ten year deal and see where it goes.

Enh, enh?
