Carnival of Monkey Island is a fanmade, hand-drawn sequel

Boba Fett, Blood Dragon, and Battleblock Theater

Hey gang! Unfortunately, we didn't do a live Destructoid Show today, but we still did one. And it's probably a little bit weird.  The big sad news is that Disney carried out Order 66 on LucasArts. Sadder still, Star War...

It hurts: Star Wars 1313 would have been about Boba Fett

The closure of LucasArts was painful to see both in terms of the studio's legacy and the projects it had in the pipeline. One such game was Star Wars 1313, a visually-impressive title that showed up a couple of times and vani...

Looking back at Star Wars, Monkey Island, and LucasArts photo
Looking back at Star Wars, Monkey Island, and LucasArts

With the Stars Wars license and money behind LucasArts, the studio only needed to follow. Instead, they innovated for 31 years.

Not only did the studio have a hand in adventure, first-person shooter, real-time strategy, and flight sim games, it changed how developers that followed would approach these genres. Innovation aside, the studio and its many teams turned out original worlds with characters, quotable quips, and locations we would love as much as those of Star Wars and Disney.

It may be some time since LucasArts put out a title of great importance (Lucidity and Fracture look onward, angrily), but it seems not so long ago that LucasArts defined our younger years and the media we spent so much time with.

After Disney laid off staff and cancelled all ongoing projects at LucasArts this week, now seems like a good time for the staff at Destructoid to reflect on the studio's history and how it ties into our own.

Disney shuts down LucasArts photo
Disney shuts down LucasArts

Disney has today announced that it's decided to close down LucasArts as a game studio, transitioning it into a "licensing model." This effectively means that LucasArts is dead, likely to exist as little more than a legacy name for externally developed Star Wars titles. A round of layoffs has been had as a result.

"After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games," claims the company. "As a result of this change, we've had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles."

R.I.P. LucasArts, and best wishes to those who have lost their jobs.

Star Wars 1313 is still in production photo
Star Wars 1313 is still in production
by Chris Carter

Despite the fact that there's already some gameplay on display, we haven't seen much from Star Wars 1313 since its initial buzz.

Kotaku reports that after reaching out to LucasArts to see how development was going, they stated that "Star Wars 1313 continues production." LucasArts is listed as a developer for the PS4, so it's possible that it has continued production into a next generation product.

The game is said to deal with hard hitting topics (at least, for the Star Wars universe) like prostitution and terrorism, making it one of the more mature IPs LucasArts has done to date.
