The fatal flaw of Kinect games is that they are built on a foundation of lies.

You are the controller -- except most games control much of the action themselves to make up for the lack of input. It's more immersive -- except the waving of your arms at nothing just makes you feel incredibly self-conscious and alienated. It's intuitive -- except the lack of tactile feedback and inherent imprecision of the input makes it far more unwieldy than button-based games. It's always better with Kinect -- except it never, ever is.

What happens when you combine the Kinect's inherent aura of lies with Lionhead Studios, a company famous for not exactly "agreeing" with reality? First of all, you get told that Fable: The Journey is not "on-rails."

It's on-rails.

Lionhead Studios is no stranger to making spin-offs for Fable. The first was an Xbox Live Arcade tie-in with Fable II called Pub Games, which was a collection of mini-games that appeared in the game and would allow you to carry over the gold to your character that you had won in Pub Games. Next up was last month's Fable Heroes: a family-friendly entry into the series that didn't exactly impress us.

With Fable: The Journey, Lionhead is crafting their most ambitious Fable yet. Now running on the Unreal Engine, it also happens to be the most beautiful Fable. When Peter Molyneux talked up Fable: The Journey last year, he claimed it was not on-rails. On the contrary, it was quite clear that wasn't exactly the case after what we saw from.

After my hands-on with The Journey this week, it's clear that the game is not on-rails. Well, sort of.

One part hack, one part slash, and one part four-player cooperative Fable with puppet heroes. Fable Heroes would be the last thing you would expect Lionhead Studios to come up with if Fable: The Journey hadn't been announced already.

In true Lionhead fashion, Fable Heroes is a game that made me feel emotions I hadn't felt in more than a year, but perhaps not the kind that it intended to elicit.

Perhaps the biggest surprise at Microsoft’s recent Xbox 360 spring showcase was the announcement of Fable: Heroes for Xbox Live Arcade.

Built by some of Lionhead’s biggest Fable fans, Heroes pays homage to many of the series’ past high points while creating its own fun and original experience. It features a charming cartoonish aesthetic, set in what appears to be a child’s board game. I mean, just look at how cute Hammer is in doll form.

If it is one thing the controller cannot do anymore, it’s offer a player “that sense of discovery which we had with the early days of games.” That’s what Peter Molyneux, the visionary behind Fable: The Journey believes, and it’s a big reason why the latest game in his iconic franchise is ditching the dual-analog setup in favor of Microsoft’s Kinect.

It’s an interesting concept. The controller really hasn't evolved in quite some time, and if it’s one thing it has never allowed, it’s that of a real connection to our virtual experience. With this novel thought in my mind, I sat ready to take Lionhead’s latest adventure for a stroll. My marvelous tale ensues.
