New Tomb Raider reveals Lara's new look photo
New Tomb Raider reveals Lara's new look
by Nick Chester

After a few weeks of teasing, Crystal Dynamic's new Tomb Raider title has been revealed. Simply called Tomb Raider (that's how we do series reboots these days), the details of the game will be revealed in the next issue of Game Informer.

As rumored, the title will follow a young Lara Croft who finds herself washed up on a mysterious island when a storm destroys a boat she was traveling on. As the only survivor, Lara is put to the test as she fights for survival.

"Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider," said Crystal Dyanmics studio head Darrell Gallagher,  "This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other."

Judging from Game Informer's cover, Lara is definitely getting a bit of a make over from the neck up. We'll learn and see more this month, as the latest issue of Game Informer is headed to subscribers now. Stay tuned.

Guardian of Light will get free downloadable content photo
Guardian of Light will get free downloadable content
by Colette Bennett

In our recent interview with Crystal Dynamics about Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, we got to find out all kinds of cool info about plans for the title, but there was one we didn't see coming -- new content.

Crystal Dynamics Global Brand Manager Karl Stewart revealed that not only will new downloadable content be coming, but that Xbox LIVE users will get it for free for the first 30 days after it is released. The content will include "challenge maps" that Stewart describes as being very difficult.

"They're pretty tough levels," he warns, "and they're made of a combination of exploration, combat, and sort of the whole traversal world we've built into Guardian of Light."

Will this content be free for PC and PSN once the game is available on those platforms later this month? Well, we don't know for sure. At least, it is not confirmed yet. Stewart did mention that an announcement is coming in the near future, so we ought to hear something soon.

Crystal Dynamics: Bringing online to Guardian of Light photo
Crystal Dynamics: Bringing online to Guardian of Light
by Nick Chester

Much like the Xbox Live Arcade version that shipped last month, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light won't support online cooperative play on PlayStation Network and PC when it's released on September 28. But don't worry, it's coming in a game update. When it does, developer Crystal Dynamics is certain the online experience will be as solid as the experience offline.

"Our goal from the very beginning [was] to make sure players had the same abilities that they find in other online co-op games," Crystal Dynamics Global Brand Director Karl Stewart tell us. This means support for online leaderboards, voice chat, as well as drop-in and drop-out support.

Stewart won't commit to a specific date for when the update will hit the PlayStation 3 and PC, instead telling us they're focusing on "guaranteeing that [they] have the experience correct." If all goes as scheduled, the XBLA update should hit by the end of the month, with a bonus -- the first of the game's upcoming downloadable content free of charge for 30 days following its release.

Review: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light photo
Review: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
by Nick Chester

Writing this is going to make me feel old, but here it goes: Lara Croft has been raiding tombs for some 14 years. In over a decade of adventures she’s seen her highs and she’s seen her lows (Angel of Darkness, anyone?). Over the past few years, developer Crystal Dynamics has done its damnedest to reinvigorate the franchise, with games like Tomb Raider: Legend and Tomb Raider: Underworld gaining generally favorable reviews from gamers and critics alike.

Its latest installment, while not a Tomb Raider game proper, is its biggest departure yet -- an isometric cooperative downloadable title called Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. While sticking true to the Lara Croft character, Crystal Dynamics casts off the “Tomb Raider” moniker in this completely fresh take on the series.

But does taking a chance and ditching a 14-year-old formula pay off, or is this just a temporary and unnecessary distraction while fans wait for the next "real" Tomb Raider title?
