Review: LEGO The Hobbit photo
Review: LEGO The Hobbit
by Ian Bonds

Another month, another LEGO game. These things are starting to be more frequently released than yearly Call of Duty games. And with that frequency comes some caveats, such as this month's title only including the two Hobbit films that have been released thus far.

Does that put a damper on the entertainment value found within? Only time -- or reading on -- will tell.

LEGO The Hobbit now available photo
LEGO The Hobbit now available

Warner Bros. has released LEGO: The Hobbit to retailers in North America today, with a European release coming on April 11. As one might expect, new marketing materials have been released for the game, including the above launch trailer.

There was once a part of me that was pretty disappointed when the LEGO game franchise implemented full voice acting for the characters. The non-verbal communication techniques used in earlier games always struck a chord with me, and their comic effect was exploited to great success. That said, I'm over it. The voice-over work is just great in this, and I'm not looking back anymore.

LEGO Minifigures Online is an MMO that anyone can jump into photo
LEGO Minifigures Online is an MMO that anyone can jump into
by Brett Makedonski

Let's face it: massively multiplayer online games can be intimidating for some people. Between the incredibly nuanced systems that some titles tout, and the tales of time and dedication required to "properly" play a game, it's not exactly an inviting scene. It's tough to fault those that shy away from the genre altogether.

Funcom's out to make an accessible free-to-play MMO, and it's got the world's most beloved toy brand behind it. LEGO Minifigures Online is a game that's technically aimed at children, but it's plenty reasonable to expect a more mature audience will find a certain cathartic thrill, too.

Review: The LEGO Movie Videogame photo
Review: The LEGO Movie Videogame
by Ian Bonds

First things first: if you haven't seen The LEGO Movie, you should probably go do that right now. It's awesome, and your face will love it.

Back yet? OK, good.

For those of you who have seen it, this is your predictable licensed tie-in. Well, predictable in that it exists, not that it behaves predictably as a tie-in. Though, if you've played any of Traveler's Tales LEGO games, there is a certain amount of predictability here anyway.

Not that most of that is a bad thing in this case...

Live Show: Is Lego Movie one of the few good licensed games?

Hey all, consider this a PSA: Lego Movie is good- like really really good. So, when a lovely fan gifted Phil a copy of the game on Steam (Thanks Shadowclone1000!) we were cautiously optimistic. Sure Lego games are typically c...

LEGO considering a Legend of Zelda set

LEGO Cuuso is a site where you can vote on fan-made LEGO sets. With 10,000 votes, a set goes to LEGO for review. It's where Minecraft LEGO set came from. Of course, LEGO can also block a set if it's deemed impractical or ther...

These Xenogears mecha made of Legos are incredible

LEGO The Hobbit sure looks familiar

This trailer for LEGO The Hobbit checks all of the usual boxes for these titles. Coming off of LEGO The Lord of the Rings and its rather neat open-ended world, I'm curious to see how this new game will differ. The silliness ...

LEGO The Last of Us should be a real thing

This video brightened my day in a huge way. It's an animator's idea of what The Last of Us franchise would look like if taken on by the Traveler's Tales team of LEGO game designers. It is now my new go-to argument in favor of the assertion that any idea, however grim, can be made funny with the proper application of Danish construction blocks.

The LEGO Movie Videogame based on The LEGO Movie

Life, death, men, women, and LEGO with Holly Pickering photo
Life, death, men, women, and LEGO with Holly Pickering
by Jonathan Holmes

A week and a half ago on Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) we were graced with the company of Ms. Holly Pickering, former artist on the bulk of Traveller's Tale's LEGO games, currently working on Ether One from White Paper Games.

Holly has an ability to talk about incredibly personal, difficult stuff with a total stranger in front of thousands of people, all without ever seeming self-centered or melodramatic. It's equal parts charming and disarming. Her humility and positivity shine through, even when focusing on the many life-changing challenges she's gone through. From a childhood of bonding over computers with her dad, to teenage years wrestling with disapproval from others for loving art and technology, to getting work at Traveller's Tales shortly thereafter, to losing her father to suicide, to going out on her own to work on more personal projects; no topic was off limits.

By the end of the episode, I was ready to simultaneously laugh, cry, and cheer for Holly all at the same time, while she appeared completely unimpressed with herself. Regardless of what she may work on in the future, she can count me among her biggest fans. Thanks again to Holly for appearing on the show, and make sure to tune this Sunday when we welcome Cristina Vee (songstress and voice actress on Shantae, League of LegendsSkullgirls and many others) to the program.
