Last Sunday on Sup Holmes we had a spirited chat with April and Christian, creators of the newly funded fighting game Pocket Rumble. We talked about the allegations that the game uses stolen graphics, how designing a fighting game can make you better at playing them, the pros and cons of damage scaling, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 Vs. Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, balancing ease of operation with depth, antler headed boys and a lot more. Designing a fighting game is no small feat. Thankfully, Cardboard Robot is so in love with the genre that I have no doubt that the'll make something great with Pocket Rumble

Before the folks at Harmonix Studios put themselves on the map with Guitar Hero and Rock Band, it was known for the cult hits Frequency and Amplitude. Blending fast-paced rhythm-based action with mesmerizing visuals and an electronic soundtrack, players could tap their feet along with the beat while using quick reflexes to achieve the high score. Though the titles never lit the charts on fire, they garnered a cult following and were fondly remembered among fans of rhythm games.

With the success of Rock Band, Guitar Hero, and Dance Central under their belts, the developers at Harmonix decided it was time to revisit the long-dormant series. Keen to show off an early build of the game in time for the upcoming PlayStation Experience event, the devs were confident they nailed their reboot of Amplitude.

And with the success of their Kickstarter campaign, they've definitely got an audience ready to check out the reunion with the long-missed series.

We were lucky enough to have Ron Gilbert (Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island) on Sup Holmes a few weeks back. Looking back, it looks like Ron may have been utilizing the show for a little pre-kickstarter promotion. Explains why he did the whole show in pixel-face. Fine by me. I'd have his pixel-faced puss on the show every week if I could. 

Ron hinted that he may be working with original Maniac Mansion artist Gary Winnick again soon, but I didn't think it would be this soon. But here we are, looking at a new SCUMM-style game from the creators of the term "cut scene" and the fathers of an entire genre. As a longtime fan of Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, and the first two Monkey Island games, I'm feeling like this all over again

It's a murder mystery that contain hundreds of locations and puzzles, all centered around Thumbleweed Park, a town that "...once boasted an opulent hotel, a vibrant business district and the state’s largest pillow factory, but now teeters on the edge of oblivion and continues to exist for no real reason." Sounds like a cross between Twin Peaks and Waiting for Guffman. Outside of Ron getting the rights to make a new Monkey Island game, this is about as close to perfect as it gets for fans of classic Lucasfilm Games.
