A LEGO Voldemort practices his game face

Here's a cute trailer for the coming conclusion of the epic LEGO Harry Potter saga, LEGO Harry Potter: Years-5-7. Voldemort is working on being creepy but we all know what he really just wants in life (unlife? re-life?) is to be loved. Perhaps this little boost to his self-image will do the trick.

The next Harry Potter has a very Gears of War feel photo
The next Harry Potter has a very Gears of War feel
by John Speerbrecker

During the EA Summer showcase, the newest entry to the Harry Potter videogame series was available to check out just before it becomes available this Tuesday. In this final chapter of the story, you must save the world and your friends from the evil Lord Voldemort and his followers otherwise know as the Death Eaters. Your job is also to destroy the remaining Horcruxes in order to remove power from Voldemort.

The game plays like a third-person shooter and is somewhat similar to Gears of War in terms of the play style. You will run from cover-to-cover shooting the Death Eaters with your wand in order to progress through the levels. For a Harry Potter game, this title looks pretty gritty. Sure there is no blood in it but the color pallets used in the backgrounds and in the character designs give it a dark ambiance to the overall feel.

Pop and stop with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows photo
Pop and stop with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

As a major fan of the Harry Potter books and films, it has always been a source of frustration that the games have never risen above just mediocre. While the open world environment of many of the past titles have been appreciated, and some of the Wii motion spell waving has been fun, nothing has ever been particularly outstanding.

So maybe it is for the best that EA and EA Bright Light Studio is going in a much different direction for the franchise with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1. Keeping pace with the books, Harry and co. are no longer at Hogwarts, traveling through England in a race to stop Voldemort from being the evil douche he is. It's a much darker plot than many of the earlier books and films, and the game is no different. However, now that I've had time with the game, I'm a little worried that this might not be the Harry Potter game I was hoping for.

I mean, crap, it's now a third person over the shoulder shooter. This isn't the wizarding world we grew up with, that's for sure.

Hit the jump for my hands-on.

Wizarding world in plastic: Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 photo
Wizarding world in plastic: Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4
by Ben Perlee

As far as fandom goes, I would have to say that Harry Potter, at least for me, reigns on top. I don't know what it is, but something about the world that J.K. Rowling created that stands out as a marvelous and creative bit of literature. Sure, there is not much about the books, the films, or the games that makes them high...art, media, whatever, but there is a basic element that makes them very satisfying.

Now, as far as the Lego franchise of games based on other IPs, things have been pretty spiffy. Star Wars, Batman, and Indiana Jones have all proven that morphing a franchise into yellow minifigs and breaking down plots to over the top slapstick can be fun. Not a bad thing, these games have been great for people of all generations, and Harry Potter is the next logical step.

So as a major fan of Harry Potter, I was very interested in seeing how Traveller's Tales is going to represent a franchise I love. Sure, fans of these Lego games pretty much know what to expect, but I was curious to find some of the new features they are bringing in. So toss in your Floo powder and say with me "After the jump!"
