Review: Soul Fjord photo
Review: Soul Fjord
by Darren Nakamura

Ouya users have not had a lot to be excited about for a while now. Excepting a few titles like Towerfall, there is not much worth owning on the microconsole, and especially few games that are not available elsewhere. As one of the more hyped titles, Airtight Games' Soul Fjord was looking like it could be a good reason to own an Ouya.

The elevator pitch is great. Soul Fjord is a rhythm-based, hack-and-slash roguelike with a truly unique setting that crosses 1970s funk and 13th Century Norse mythology. Protagonist Magnus Jones has to fight for his right to party after being denied access to Valhalla. Unfortunately, unlike Jones's expertly coiffed afro, Soul Fjord falls flat in its execution.

Hyrule Warriors is Dynasty Warriors with Link in it

Nintendo has lost its mind. (In a good way. I think.) During this morning's Nintendo Direct presentation, company president Satoru Iwata revealed a collaboration with Tecmo Koei tentatively called Hyrule Warriors.

The working title looks to combine Dynasty Warriors' hack and slash formula with The Legend of Zelda's universe. Weird! It's coming to Wii U sometime in 2014.

The best and worst games of the week - Racing Royalty
by Wesley Ruscher

Oh December! You are by far my favorite month of the year, and not just because it's Christmas and my birthday. Your winter slumber in the games department allows me the leisure of checking my backlog list twice and knocking off some of those naughty titles I've been neglecting.

I'm not sure how the rest of the month is going to pan out for you, but you did deliver us another phenomenal racing title with Sony's Gran Turismo 6. And I'm really not sure how any one human can handle this, Need for Speed: Rivals, F1 2013, and Forza 5... but we all know Destructoid's racing guru, Mr. Dale "don't call me Peter" North has been gunning it full throttle the last few months. I think it's time for cruise control.

Now on to the week in reviews!

PS Mobile titles Gun Commando, Mononoke Slashdown go free photo
PS Mobile titles Gun Commando, Mononoke Slashdown go free
by Jordan Devore

As Chris told us, Sony is giving away ten PlayStation Mobile games for free this holiday season. The current pair of titles is an old-school first-person shooter called Gun Commando and a 2D hack-and-slash romp named Mononoke Slashdown, shown above.

If you're a Vita owner, find these in the PlayStation Mobile section of the storefront. Otherwise, they're listed on the PS Mobile Store for those who have a PlayStation-certified mobile device.

I wasn't going to write about the games unless they looked reasonably decent, and that seems to be the case, particularly for Mononoke Slashdown. One of the bosses is the mythological Wanyūdō, a burning wheel with a face. Yep, that settles it. This game isn't covering new ground by any means, but it looks worth getting for free.

Review: Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage photo
Review: Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage
by Conrad Zimmerman

Through the course of eight stages, Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage tells the story of two swordsmen, Soul and Shang. Recent recruits of an assassin order known as "Cabal," they seek answers to the mystery of their disappeared mentor, Jade, lost on a mission against a domineering power in the Martial Realm.

At least, I'm pretty sure that's what happened.

Review: Valhalla Knights 3 photo
Review: Valhalla Knights 3
by Wesley Ruscher

Valhalla Knights 3 is dark and seedy. Its world congested with miscreants, lowlifes, and criminals; its landscape drab, dreary, and rundown. It borrows the unforgiving brutality of Dark Souls; the backbreaking grind found in the hardest of dungeon crawls; and all the statistical management and character tweaking of a typical MMORPG wrapped in a fantastic soundtrack by famed Japanese composer Motoi Sakuraba.

It also suffers from a pedigree that is quite abysmal. Beginning on the PSP and making a brief detour on the Wii, the Valhalla Knights series has been nothing short of a disappointing. An action-RPG series full of promising ideas, but ideas slopped together haphazardly to much critical chagrin.

With Valhalla Knights 3 though, developer K2 has a chance to start fresh on a new platform. Moving to the PS Vita, a system still much in its infancy, allows the developer a better chance of carving out a niche for itself in a landscape void of staunch competition. For the most part Valhalla Knights 3 cleans up the mess of its predecessors; unfortunately it introduces a whole new bevy of embarrassing design decisions to boot.
