Nintendo Force magazine is the new kid on the block photo
Nintendo Force magazine is the new kid on the block
by Tony Ponce

So Nintendo Power is over and done with. Tears and all that. Pour one out for our homies.

The throne has been abdicated. Time for a new king to rise to power.

You've likely heard about a little something called Nintendo Force magazine. Lucas Thomas, Nintendo editor over on IGN, decided that there always needs to be a source of non-stop Nintendo news in this world, so he decided to fire off a few emails and assemble a team, Avengers style.

Nintendo Force will be both a print and online periodical, and the founding team features 16 of the most notable Nintendo heads in the industry. The squad includes got Kevin "RMC" Cassidy from GoNintendo, Matthew Taranto from Brawl in the Family, my buddy David Oxford from 1UP and The Mega Man Network, Daan Koopman from Nintendo World Report, and the loveable, huggable Jonathan Holmes, who has been a sneaky little sneak and not told anyone of his secret plans!

I wish the magazine the best and hope it can carry the torch that Nintendo Power hoisted for nearly 25 years. Follow all the updates, including the yet-to-be-announced first issue launch, either on the Nintendo Force website or the Facebook page.

Offbeat Hall of Fame: Nintendo Super Power Supplies photo
Offbeat Hall of Fame: Nintendo Super Power Supplies
by Tony Ponce

[Offbeat Hall of Fame is a showcase of the cool, often bizarre products and media from years past that celebrate videogames and gamer culture.]

Have you picked up your copy of the final Nintendo Power yet? Looking through it again, I still have trouble accepting that a piece of my childhood is gone for good. However, thanks to the magic of the Internet, a trip down memory lane is but a click away.

There are many things I loved about Nintendo Power -- the maps, the comics, the Classified Information cheats section that always devoted a page or two to Super Mario World -- but something about physical goodies always filled me with a special glee. And there was no better repository of Nintendo merchandise in the 90s than the Super Power Supplies catalog!

Before digital retailers became a thing, mail order catalogs were the only way to obtain nifty items unavailable in stores. For the Nintendo generation, Super Power Supplies was our shopping mecca. Because how cool was the kid wearing a sick-ass Fulgore mask on Halloween?

Nintendo Power's last hurrah leaves me in tears photo
Nintendo Power's last hurrah leaves me in tears
by Tony Ponce

Last night, I noticed that the final issue of Nintendo Power was in stock at Barnes & Noble. Naturally, I bought two copies: one to peruse and one to leave in the shrink wrap FOR. EV. ER.

If you've ever been an NP reader or subscriber, you need to pick this baby up. The mag is so chock-full of good feelings and pleasant memories, which makes it all the more painful to read. But as Butters once said, it's "like a beautiful sadness."

I want to share a few impressions about issue #285 in the hopes that you'll run out the door to snag a copy as soon as possible.

PlayStation: The Official Magazine to cease publication photo
PlayStation: The Official Magazine to cease publication
by Tony Ponce

Damn, son. Future US is on the warpath as of late. It wasn't enough for the publishing house to pull the plug on Nintendo Power; now its sights are set on PlayStation: The Official Magazine (not to be confused with PlayStation Official Magazine in the UK, published by Future US parent company Future plc).

PTOM may not have had as long a run as NP, but the turn of events is no less tragic. First launched in September 1997 with Final Fantasy VII on the cover, it was originally known as PlayStation Magazine -- PSM for short -- and rebranded in after its tenth anniversary. Now, the door to this particular tale will close after the Holiday 2012 issue.

I can't say I have any personal investment in PTOM as I did with NP, but I'm no less disappointed in hearing about another venerable print mag going the way of the dodo. Pour a 40, fellas.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse coming to 3DS eShop photo
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse coming to 3DS eShop

What? WHAT? WHAAAAT!? WHAAAAAAAAAAAT!?

Suck it down! That's what I'm talkin' 'bout! Hell yeah!

The cover of November's Nintendo Power features our half-genie starlet in full pirate garb, teaming up with her archnemesis Risky Boots for as of yet unknown reasons. At the end of Risky's Revenge, Shantae lost her magic, so it'll be exciting to see how she handles her new threats in this upcoming eShop sequel.

More details are bound to appear soon. In the meantime, GET EXCITE.
