I haven't been keeping up with Dark Souls II speedruns. I should be. We got a tip in this weekend about Marksel's 21:25 world-record any% run, which has since been topped by Distortion2's 20:14 run, included above. Seems they've got a bit of a friendly rivalry going on right now.

How are these times feasible? Glitches. Bypassing the Shrine of Winter. Running above and below the environment. Binoculars, which inadvertently allow for absurd movement speeds.

I realize that any% runs aren't as interesting to some of you who prefer to see most if not all of a game's content bested, not skipped, and I tend to agree. All the same, watching people obliterate a game I've poured an ungodly amount of hours into is captivating and oddly satisfying.

In the weeks leading up to E3, there have been some truly interesting leaks. Headlining that list is undoubtedly "Project Beast," rumored to be the working title for the next From Software game. The next (Demon's?) Souls. The return of series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Please let this be real.

If you've seen the believable-looking images, feel free to join me in hoping this game pans out sooner than later -- that, should it be legitimate, we don't have to wait until Tokyo Game Show in September for an announcement. Having just recently cleared Dark Souls II and been somewhat underwhelmed by it, I've been thinking about why, and what I might want out of the next Souls title, Project Beast or otherwise. I'm sure you've thought about the topic before too. Let's talk it out.

From Software, makers of Dark Souls and Armored Core, has just been snapped up by Japanese mega-publisher Kadokawa Corporation. They will be come a subsidiary of Kadokawa after the transfer of 80 percent of the company's shares takes place on May 21. Current holder Transcomos will gain the equivalent of $17 million for the sale of From Software.

Never head of 'em? I bet you have. Kadokawa Corporation is one of the biggest media companies in the east, with their hands in film, television, animation (all the Media Factory stuff), gaming, books, magazines (Famitsu, Dengeki, ASCII), and so much more. They handled Killer is Dead in Japan, and the game I'm playing right now, Demon Gaze, is also a Kadokawa Games release. 

From Software is in good (and huge) hands.

According to Gematsu, Kadokawa Corp. hopes that the acquisition of From Software will help them expand in the games industry. Their studios will share expertise and resources to achieve this goal.

The appearance of the original Dark Souls on PC was welcome but it was... let's say troubled. Its innovative online mode was married to the much maligned Games for Windows Live service and the game was locked at a piddly 1024x768 resolution. Whilst it's understandable developer From Software's lack of experience in creating PC games would have affected the final product, it was still a bitter pill to swallow for PC gamers keen to get their hands on a Souls game.

Whilst enterprising modders would fix up some of the problems, the onus was on From Software to deliver a much more capable PC version of Dark Souls II. They certainly haven't made the same mistakes as before but it still isn't the fully featured PC port many would have hoped for.

My experience with the Souls series is one of my favorite memories of my entire gaming career. Playing Demon's Souls for the first time made me feel like a kid again, back when games didn't hold your hand and explain every single facet of the adventure -- leaving everything to your imagination.

Even though Dark Souls was mainly just a refinement of the formula on a technical level, it offered up all-new experiences that felt wholly unique, and raised the bar in many respects. But then something changed -- Hidetaka Miyazaki, the producer and arguably the heart and soul of the franchise left, passing the torch to Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura to carry on his legacy.

Once again, Dark Souls II remains relatively unchanged from its predecessors, and still offers up most of the same magic that you fell in love with the first two times around.
