Review: Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 photo
Review: Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2
by Jim Sterling

Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage was a great game, at least if you liked the Dynasty Warriors series and had an affection for the punch-happy manga upon which it was based. Kenshiro's post-apocalyptic wanderings worked remarkably well with the brawling, one-against-all gameplay Koei is famous for.

Koei is also famous for masses of sequels, and a follow-up was inevitable. Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 snuck out quietly compared to its predecessor, and unfortunately, there seems to be a reason for it.

The reason being, of course, that it's a paltry shadow of the original title in terms of visuals, quality, and ... pretty much everything.

Review: Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper photo
Review: Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper
by Jim Sterling

Warriors Orochi 3 was one of the best entries in Koei's long-running Warriors series, perhaps since Dynasty Warriors 3. Not only was it packed with content, the inclusion of Ryu Hayabusa, Joan of Arc, and other characters from Tecmo Koei's game library, made it quite a special installment.

The Wii U has given the publisher another chance to release a great game, and Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper seeks to justify itself with more content -- including two new characters and a dueling mode that evokes memories of Golden Axe's oft-forgotten competitive feature.

It would have been a decent idea, had the port job not turned out so badly.

Review: One Piece: Pirate Warriors photo
Review: One Piece: Pirate Warriors
by Bob Muir

I've never really paid attention to Dynasty Warriors, as Chinese history usually isn't something that grabs my attention. Besides, I didn't think that I was missing much more than a whole lot of button mashing. Then Namco Bandai and Tecmo Koei announced that they were making a Dynasty Warriors game based on One Piece, Shonen Jump's anime/manga franchise about a stretchy boy trying to become the next Pirate King. Most anime-licensed games tend to be forgettable, but early footage looked surprisingly fun, like it could capture the energy of the source material.

Though plenty of anime games get passed over for localization, Namco Bandai actually decided to release One Piece: Pirate Warriors, albeit without an English dub. Fans should feel lucky the game is being released at all -- One Piece's popularity outside of Japan is far lower than other Shonen Jump properties like Bleach or Naruto. But is the game worth playing, or is it just Dynasty Warriors with cel-shading and stranger characters?

TGS: Ken's Rage 2 brings hot fisting action to the masses photo
TGS: Ken's Rage 2 brings hot fisting action to the masses
by Allistair Pinsof

I don’t know much about Fist of the North Star other than it’s very violent. I don’t know much about Dynasty Warriors other than there are a lot of dudes on screen to kill. That being said, Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage 2 isn’t very violent nor does it have an astonishing amount of enemies on screen. On the other hand, it is very dumb -- the kind of dumb that can be a positive or negative depending on who’s being asked.

Jim Sterling rather enjoyed the first Ken’s Rage, so if you are Jim Sterling you may enjoy this one. I, however, found the limited amount of moves and dumb AI to make for a poor beat-em-up. There is enough to set Ken’s Rage apart from similar Omega Force developed games, such as the ability to evade moves, smaller scale combat, and more attention to narrative (told through in-game cutscenes and manga-style cinematics).

Fist of North Star fans have a lot to look forward to as Fudo, Juda, Shu, Shachi and other allies will be in the game alongside series villains like Jackal, Falco, Colonel, and Devil’s Rebirth. The second half of the demo actually let me play as Falco, who was slow but powerful. It didn't really do much for me, with the low res textures and repetitive combat but Koei is giving Fist of North Star devotees the type of fan service that anime games rarely receive.

Ken's Rage 2 will arrive on Wii U, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in February.
