I Shoot Many Robots (and you can too)

We've been watching the progress on Shoot Many Robots pretty closely since its reveal last year at GDC and it's come a long way in that time. P. Walter Tugnuts' quest to save the world from killer machines struck a chord with me early on with a down-and-dirty approach to the side-scrolling shooter and an emphasis on character customization.

As it continues to edge its way to release, Demiurge offered me an opportunity to check in on that progress with a preview build of the game featuring the first three stages. I can confirm that there is still a seemingly endless supply of robots to shoot and to do so is to know joy.

Demiurge Renders a new Shoot Many Robots trailer

I'm a big fan of behind-the-scenes trailers. Often I'd prefer a video that offers a window into the developer's world, like this one for Shoot Many Robots, to a run-of-the-mill vignette. Demiurge Studios decided to let ...

Shoot Many Robots while wearing Mr. Destructoid's helmet!

Shoot Many Robots hero P. Walter Tugnuts is a man who recognizes style. That's why you see him sporting this highly fashionable helmet in the latest trailer Ubisoft has released for the game. Indeed, among the hundreds of clothing and weapon options available to players in the run-and-gun shooter next year is the head of our site mascot, Mr. Destructoid.

I saw this helmet at PAX and kind of lost my cool a little bit. The feeling of seeing that face in other people's projects never really goes away, especially when it's a title that I am already keenly interested in. Cheers to the totally awesome folks at Demiurge for making a game about robots and wanting to include ours.

You'll be able to don Mr. Destructoid's head for yourself next year in Shoot Many Robots on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

Shoot Many Robots' survival missions are a blast photo
Shoot Many Robots' survival missions are a blast
by Wesley Ruscher

If you haven't already read Conrad's preview about Shoot Many Robots, then you should probably take a moment to click the different colored text above and catch up. For those of you already in the know, keep reading and I'll share a little more about Demiurge Studio's drunken Metal Slug-meets-Borderlands action romp that's coming to console and PC download services next year.

At an event earlier this week, Ubisoft was showing off the latest build of its recently acquired four-player side-scrolling blast-a-thon. The campaign section I played remains faithful to what our mustached muse described back at GDC, but I also had the pleasure to tackle a little of Shoot Many Robots' take on horde mode -- survival missions.

Once upon a time, two-dimensional "run-and-gun" shooters were a staple of the gaming landscape. But after being granted the immersion and strategic variety available in the third dimensions, it looked like the days of running to the right and holding down the fire button could end. Thankfully, that hasn't happened yet and the genre now appears to be going through something of a renaissance as gameplay elements from their 3D cousins find themselves tucked into that comfortable old format to create experiences simultaneously familiar and fresh.

Shoot Many Robots continues this trend, throwing in what seems to be almost every possible mechanic of modern shooters -- along with a kitchen sink for good measure.
