You could theoretically make Deep Silver package a real zombie with Dead Island 2 Collector's Edition

Remember the last time we talked about a Dead Island collector's edition and it was a disembodied female torso? I don't think Deep Silver wants to go that route this time, so they're turning to the community to find out what ...

Escape Dead Island is a single-player 'survival mystery' photo
Escape Dead Island is a single-player 'survival mystery'
by Steven Hansen

The next Dead Island game isn't Dead Island 2. Of course, Dead Island: Riptide already showed the series' disregard for numeration. Counting the early access MOBA, Dead Island 2 should be Dead Island 5. But Dead Island is doing things differently in order to "create a universe in this IP."

And from this comes Escape Dead Island, a single-player only, cel-shaded "survival mystery" that's "Groundhog's Day meets Memento." I wouldn't go that far. It's something different, though.

Dead Island Epidemic is a 'ZOMBA,' not a MOBA, get it right

Dead Island Epidemic's four-minute gameplay video tries really hard to be hardcore, but I cringed at the way the announcer said the title. It wasn't good. With that said, it looks like it could be fun. Obviously this is a MO...

These were the best trailers of E3 2014 photo
These were the best trailers of E3 2014
by Brett Makedonski

That's another E3 in the books. After months of speculation as to what gaming's most important convention might hold, four quick days clear everything up. In a way, it almost feels criminally short given everything that's on display at the show.

While it's impossible to personally see everything at E3, publishers always put their best foot forward by releasing new trailers for almost the entirety of their portfolio. It's a handy practice, as it's a nice marketing tactic to give the world a controlled glimpse of their games.

It's important to remember that trailers need to be taken with a grain of salt. They might accurately portray the title. Rather, they may eventually completely misrepresent the game entirely. Regardless of what the future holds for each, these were the trailers that best captured our attention last week.

Techland: We didn't want Dying Light to be Dead Island 2

Ever since Techland's Dying Light was announced, it's drawn comparisons to Dead Island -- the studio's previous title. It's easy to see how many would come to that quick conclusion with it being an open-wo...

Huh. I missed that Spec Ops: The Line studio Yager is handling development on Dead Island 2. That knowledge combined with the excellent CG trailer has me mildly interested.

Here's Max sharing his thoughts after seeing an early demo at E3. He's feeling similarly guarded, but says the tone is improved and there's enhancements to weapon crafting -- you'll be able to build stuff like a motorized pitchfork, a weed-whacker with blades on it, and a fiery crossbow.

Dead Island 2 isn't due out until spring 2015 where it'll be available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, so we'll see how it progresses from here. Can't wait to see that motion-captured cat.

Saints Row IV thinks highly of itself, releasing Game of the Century Edition

Ever since the third installment in the series, Saints Row has been a franchise that hasn't been afraid to toot its own horn. Not necessarily without cause, though -- after all, Saints Row IV was pretty darn good. B...

Goats make everything better

Goats, man. I've been all about them ever since I started playing Coffee Stain Studios' weird, wild, surprisingly secret-filled Goat Simulator. Fact: more games need goats. As uninterested as I am in Dead Island: Epidemic, a...

Games with Gold: Dead Island, Toy Soldiers: Cold War photo
Games with Gold: Dead Island, Toy Soldiers: Cold War
by Jordan Devore

Microsoft's Games with Gold promotion is becoming a parody of itself. In February, Xbox Live Gold subscribers are once again getting two free titles, one that is the first installment of a popular franchise, and another that's an enjoyable but perhaps under-appreciated Xbox Live Arcade title. Those are Dead Island and Toy Soldiers: Cold War, respectively.

As ever, the first free game -- in this case, Dead Island -- will become free for Gold members on the first of the month. So, tomorrow. You'll then have until February 16 to download it at which point game number two, Cold War, goes free for the rest of the month.

You really should make a note to download that second one, though -- you get to shoot at tanks as an offbrand Rambo toy. It's pretty special. I also much preferred its setting over the first Toy Soldiers, so if you resisted it for similar reasons, consider getting the sequel.
