Pray at the altar of NES chiptune metal with Diad

Chiptunes are cool and all, but you know me -- I gotta have that little extra edge. When chip music emulates face-melting metal, it's one of the nine most beautiful things in the world (maybe some day I'll tell you what the o...

Chiptunes = WTFLOL!? Non-chip covers of chip jams photo
Chiptunes = WTFLOL!? Non-chip covers of chip jams
by Tony Ponce

[Update: The album is live! Hit up the Bandcamp page to get your free jams!]

If you are a big chiptune nut, you've probably heard me make mention of "Chiptunes = WIN," a chip appreciation group that has released three free collections of original chiptune music over the past year: the original Chiptunes = WIN, ChipWIN Expansion Pack, and chipWINter. Many artists were assembled to make these projects a reality, and fearless ChipWIN leader Brandon Hood couldn't be more pleased with the reception. I mean, it's literally hours of awesome bleeps and bloops. Who wouldn't be excited by this stuff?

The next little treat in the pipeline is Chiptunes = WTFLOL, a six-track EP set to be released after the listening party on 8bitX's "8 Bit Power Hour," starting right now at 8:00 PM EST which is now over. In a wild twist, this album does not feature any chiptunes. Rather, six popular videogame music arrangers have selected six tracks from the past three ChipWIN releases to cover in their own signature styles.

The arrangers include Final Fantasy cover band The World Is Square, The OneUps' Tim Yarbrough, Jameson Sutton, VikingGuitar, Metroid Metal's Stemage, and post-rock Zelda album performer Cory Johnson. Nice spread there, no? Go cop it at the link below!

Remember when space was the coolest?

The ridiculous Animation Domination YouTube channel puts out a lot of awesome short cartoons. Their latest one is a love letter to the '80s and '90s full of pop culture references, including plenty towards gaming. The chiptune portion of the song was also done by Pete Berkman of Anamanaguchi fame.

Chiptunes plus '80s electronic music is quite delicious

Ubiktune is at it again, this time with a new artist named Monomer who's debut album, Quite Operational, combines '80s-tinged electronic music with 8-bit accents. While I'd normally pass on something that so heavily emphasize...

Mega Man 2 OST now on sale, but beware of audio hiccups

Halo 4 OST Volume 2 is everything I wanted out of Halo 4 photo
Halo 4 OST Volume 2 is everything I wanted out of Halo 4
by Jayson Napolitano

Welcome back to Note Worthy, our monthly soundtrack round-up. This issue marks one year of Note Worthy, and I'm changing up things a bit with formatting. In the past, I've featured our ten monthly reviews in alphabetical order, giving each album equal weight, but I want to experiment a bit with this format and present it in a way that lets readers sift through and pick up on the most important releases of the month first with a more in-depth look.

With that said, Halo 4 Original Soundtrack Vol. 2 gets top honors this month, as it provides everything that was missing from the first volume in terms of ambiance and bad ass soundscapes. Other notable releases include Magical Chase and Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin.

As always, enjoy streaming samples courtesy of our SoundCloud account and let us know what you think of the new format! Here's to another year of Note Worthy!
