In 2010, Konami took a chance on the obscure Spanish development studio MercurySteam to create a reboot for one of the most adored and quoted game series ever. While Castlevania: Lords of Shadow went on to become a popular seller and was admired for its storytelling and action, it was a also a polarizing entry among fans of the series.

Now, the developers are back with their next and final title in the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series -- and they fully intend on leaving their mark on the franchise. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is daring, shows the clout that the developers earned from their previous outing, and also marks the first time we'll get to play as the infamous Dracula.

Destructoid was invited out to play the first few hours of the game, where we also had some time to chat with game producer Dave Cox. We got to see firsthand what it took to bring this iconic character to life, and how the developers at MercurySteam plan to make the series relevant again.

New releases: Killers everywhere photo
New releases: Killers everywhere
by Fraser Brown

I'll be spending this week playing catch up, but there's no dearth of new releases. Killer is Dead is tempting me, because bloody hell it looks flashy, but I'll probably leave until I'm not drowning in games. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is notable too, if only because it was originally a shockingly poor MMO and had to be entirely rebuilt. I've not been impressed with the results, and found myself sick of it after a weekend. Others seem to be getting more out of it, however.

Also on the docket this week, we've got Lost Planet 3, which is nice if you're sick of the summer heat; Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons comes to the PC, which pleases me greatly; and some burly American fellows kick a ball around in Madden NFL 25. There's more too, but you'll have to scroll down for that.

Anything floating your boat this week?

Super Mario Crossover 3.0 is finally out photo
Super Mario Crossover 3.0 is finally out
by Tony Ponce

Super Mario Crossover, the pixel-for-pixel recreation of Super Mario Bros. that features a selectable cast of NES stars, was all set for the big 3.0 update this past June. It was unfortunately delayed a month, but it is now available for your pleasure. Head on down to developer Exploding Rabbit's site to give the new revision a spin.

New to 3.0 are the levels from Super Mario Bros. Special, a Japan-only port / remake for the NEC PC-8801 and Sharp X1; a difficulty system that drastically alters level layouts; and more skins for levels and characters to make them look like various other games on the NES, SNES, Game Boy, and so on. More tweaks and skins are planned for the future, but this is likely the last big update.

Exploding Rabbit is now hard at work on Super Retro Squad, which follows the style of Super Mario Crossover only with original characters and levels. While originally looking like an NES game, the graphics have been beefed up to a more detailed 16-bit style, though it looks like there may still be skins to "downgrade" the look to 8-bit and handheld styles. The game will also feature four-player online and local co-op. You can check the new screens below.
