Tabula Rasa is shutting down this February photo

Richard Garriot’s Tabula Rasa is shutting down its live service on February 28. Players who still want to get a taste of bargain bin sci-fi MMO action will be able to play the game for free starting January 10. An open letter (in full after the break) was addressed to the community this afternoon stating the reason for the shutdown was performance-based.

For the seemingly few people still eager to pay for the privilege of playing a dying game, NCSoft (the game’s developer) has a few tricks up its sleeves. They will be offering three free months of City of Heroes and Lineage II. In addition to this, players will also be able to get access to the beta for Aion, another MMO gracing the world in 2009.

I never got the chance to check out Tabula Rasa, and I’m sad that I didn’t. I’ve always found the idea of a science fiction MMO alluring, but time has always been a factor. Are there any TR players here? How do you feel about this?

To the Tabula Rasa Community,

Last November we launched what we hoped would be a ground breaking sci-fi MMO. In many ways, we think we've achieved that goal. Tabula Rasa has some unique features that make it fun and very different from every other MMO out there. Unfortunately, the fact is that the game hasn't performed as expected. The development team has worked hard to improve the game since launch, but the game never achieved the player population we hoped for.

So it is with regret that we must announce that Tabula Rasa will end live service on February 28, 2009.

Before we end the service, we'll make Tabula Rasa servers free to play starting on January 10, 2009.

We can assure you that through the next couple of months we'll be doing some really fun things in Tabula Rasa, and we plan to make staying on a little longer worth your while. For more details about what we are doing for Tabula Rasa players, please click here.

Stay tuned for more information. We thank you for your loyal support of the game and encourage you to take us up on the benefits we're offering Tabula Rasa players.

The Tabula Rasa Team

I was in the beta for that game. It was fun at first but then it just got boring - even before the beta was up. It reminded me way too much of WOW. Had the gameplay been more like Resistance 2 coop, it would have rocked.

I was really bummed when I read this. I did a few voices in Tabula Rasa, but never played it due to the fact that my "current" computers are all Macs. I kept looking on YouTube for an encounter that my voice may have appeared in (y'know, like how people upload WoW encounters) but never did see any.

Oh well. I thought it would be so cool to have my voice live on in this world for years and years, but I guess not.

I pre-ordered the game which gave me access to the beta. I ended up canceling my pre-order based on my beta experience.

Two on my brother in laws picked up the special edition for a really cheap price and played it for a bit. Don't think they stuck at it. It's a shame that a non-fantasy MMO doesn't seem to work (apart from EVE online).

I got Tabula Rasa as a present a little while ago, played it for about half an hour, and never played it again.

So, there you have it.

Well, Anarchy Online is still around as a sci-fi MMO. City of heroes isn't sword and sorcery fantasy, it's still very much alive. And Chanmpions as well as Star Trek Online are coming up next year.

I beta tested the game, and to be honest my left testical while being beaten could develop a better game. The graphics were poor, the plot was poor, the over all design was just poor. Honestly I don't think Richard worked on it longer than a few full days.

In fact from what I gather from beta and the general community he screwed around most of the time while basically college grads tweaked with the MMO.

I really don't get why people think Garriot is such a great MMO maker. I mean, he's had one successful MMO. His work since then hasn't really proven that he has adapted to the new generation of MMORPGs.

I don't get all the flack leveled against this game. I made a trial account and loved every minute of it. I thought the graphics were great (for an MMO); the controls were responsive. It's probably the smoothest-controlling MMO I've ever tried.

Out of all the dozens of MMOs I've played, none of them made me feel more like a bad ass (and less like a gerbil on a wheel) than Tabula Rasa.

In the end, I just couldn't commit to this - or any - MMO, though. Still, it makes me genuinely sad to see a good game go down.

In the end Tabular Rasa came down to the same shitty slog as all MMOs do. Grind, grind, grind. Even when you reach the level cap in them you're just grinding. That's all you do, the same thing over and over again. I let Warhammer fool me into thinking it was different and it is. You grind against real people instead of AI, fantastic.

I couldn't even get into the story because the people I was playing with plowed through the quests and I had to keep up so I didn't develop even the slightest attatchment.

I assume people get really into them because they are susceptable to falling into routines. Once you're in a routine it's hard to get out, especially when that routine involves pretty colours and flashes.

I was at that event in your screenshot. DE Day, December 21 2007 (or 2014, if you asked the game).

A scifi mmorpg billed as a mmofps game. Anarchy Online does a better job and that's just sad. I think the biggest fault of the game is the lack of pvp, there's just two factions: the bane(npc) and humans. Even the guild battles is kind of boring.

I must say its not surprising , that game was simply... bad , i subscribe few months , playing a sniper , god i loved my optical cloak armour , it was fun like a month or so , but yea definitely boring , and generally poor... and yea Chronic Logic , god don’t get me started on pvp >.<
"It's a shame that a non-fantasy MMO doesn't seem to work (apart from EVE online)."
Well i think its just the game’s poor design not really the theme , look at Huxley and coming game , there are enough sci-fi mmo that are coming
I agree with Wack , the Garriot hype is all marketing , would have been better to hire some unknown guy that make a solid game than spend your money on a name, who’s making a bad mmo at the end.

This is why I fucking hate MMOs, no one knows when they're going to die. If at least they were decent people and released tools so anyone could create a server. BUT NO!

There are two collector's editions of the game that I pass every time I'm in my local Walmart. I feel a little bad for them. They're both covered in dust on the very bottom rack of the PC display, still priced at $69.95. They'll probably be there even after the servers shut down.

I really, *really* wanted to like this game, but I couldn't even finish the tutorial missions back in the beta.

Picked this up at Target on clearance about 6 months ago for $8. I played for an hour or two. After which, I promptly uninstalled and deactivated my account.

I'm not surprised. It was a shitty game in beta and release.

I played the beta for months, and really enjoyed the concept - while people are right in saying that it was mostly a typical grind-based MMO, that's par for the course and really not specific. The combat and leveling systems in TR were actually rather innovative, and the FPS-style controls made it a lot more fun to play than the typical, "click on monster. Use spell 1, spell 2, hit with sword. Move on" type gameplay you see in most MMOs. Unfortunately it was crazy buggy and had massive sections of the game just missing before release... it could have benefited from a tighter design philosophy and a much better staffed development team. The beta had large sections that were still virtually unplayable days before release... I didn't want to spend money on something that was still that buggy.

The idea for TR was one that hooked me immediately. I really liked it. I played the beta and thought it was good, but not good enough compared to the likes of wowcrack; so I left it alone for a few months after the launch, then I picked up a copy at my local gamestore and installed it. I was a little disappointed to find that the only change I could find was the addition of a auction house, something common in most MMO's, and new playable races. So I played the game, enjoyed it, but finally had to decide to take it into the backyard and bury it (or unsubscribe I can't remember which).

On reflection, a grand idea with poor development. It's a shame as it could have been so much more.
