Syndicate will NOT be using an online pass photo

While even EA's single-player games have found excuses to slip in an online pass, the co-op fueled Syndicate is confirmed to NOT use one at all. According to EA, it's all about encouraging gamers to play it ... what an innovation!

"We want as little resistance or barriers to entry as possible," executive producer Jeff Gamon told Eurogamer . "The co-op is equal billing in this. We wanted everyone who owns a copy of the game to have access to the entire product."

It's very interesting that even Electronic Arts recognizes that the lack of an online pass is a selling point, and that's part of the reason I resist passes so vocally and regularly. The more developers have to defend online passes to consumers, the more of a good PR move it becomes to not include one, and then there's more incentive to drop the practice.

In any case, this is very pleasant to see. Good going!

"Electronic Arts recognizes that the lack of an online pass is a selling point"

Could that possibly mean this game is going to suck Sasquatch balls and EA is looking for any positive press it can find about it pre-release?

Fuck. Now I feel like I need to buy this game even though I have no desire to play it. Like this is the guinea pig to prove that Online Passes are hurting the industry, and real consumers have some balls and will vote with their dollar. Idk. Isn't there a demo coming out for this? If it's not TERRIBLE I'll probably buy it, just out of counter-protest.

Or maybe this is EXACTLY what EA wants. Maybe they've been putting Online Passes in all their good games to try and get people to buy their shitty games. CONSPIRACY THEORY! lol

It's a shame. Because that will make this game sell much less because of the worse-than-AIDS people who buy used and sell their games to GameStop. Buy new. If you can't afford new, you shouldn't be buying videogames in the first place. Get your priorities straight. Amazon.com sells new console releases for as low as $20 depending on the day/game/deal, you should never even have to pay anywhere near $60 for a new game anyways.

Come the fuck at me, bro.

I don't wanna praise this news more than I should because it seems like such a trivial thing, but this is just awesome.

They're actually being quite crafty with this. They know that the game was not likely to hit it big. But not if it doesn't they have an excuse to fall back on and use it to justify online passess hence forth on all of their stuff.

Then again you have something like their Star Wars MMO not forcing Origin while ME3 and BF3 do.

It's official, everyone! EA is either really smart or absolutely schizophrenic... Or maybe it's both. Dammit, I guess it's not official at all.

@seymour

it's not as trivial as you might think. all these things big publishers have been trying to do lately are just testing grounds to see how they can retain the control they've so far enjoyed.

also, welcome to dtoid! and yes, we can totally say fuck here and no one even bats an eye. one of the many reasons this place is far superior to so many other gaming-related sites.

Wish Sony felt the same way with Twisted Metal, especially upon the insistence of Jaffe, to not include an online pass so that they could attract the most amount of customers to the game, new and used. Here's to hoping more publishers currently under this online pass for everything they publish will at least make exceptions.

I would hold off the celebrations for now. If anything, it's more likely the possible decreased revenues from this game will be used by EA to push even harder for online passes. Or perhaps it's EA recognizing that it's too risky to impose on a new IP (which syndicate might as well be) the same restrictions they impose on the big names (hence, Amalur on Steam). Either of those are far more likely than a move towards consumer-friendly practices on EA's part.

@Epic: Worse-than-AIDS!

I'm just sayin' if you enjoy the fuck outta a game, like totally LUST THE SHIT OUTTA a game, shouldn't the developer see full/fair profit? They worked hard to make something you actually loved so they should be compensated(not so much the publisher, that's just a side-effect) for their time and hard work. This is why I immediately stopped buying used and selling my games to GameStop when I learned that devs get jack shit from used sales.

@Rammstein:

They'd get more if you bought used and sent money to the dev. (note: DEV, not publisher). Publisher gets the lion's share.

@rammstein...buying new at GameStop doesn't give the devs extra money either. They made their money selling it to gstop. Your giving the money to gstop to buy their game. Yes the more it sells the more gamestop orders, but that's something I could care less about. If you want to feel like you're making a difference, buy it directly from ea, etc.

Jim, isn't only a good PR move if passes are still fairly common? If dropped entirely, it ceases to become news/a selling point and most consumers would simply forget that it's a feature. DRM free is still reported in PC games because even though many companies have made trides, either in having no or nonintrusive DRM(Steam, Origin I guess), Ubisoft and others hold up the shitty DRM banner.

That actually brings up a question in its own right. With the WiiU having NFC, how would you feel about an Online pass that you simply need to place on the controller to work? Would no hassle online passes change how you view them?

Well if this is one of those games that focuses very heavily on online coop, then this game would be dead in the water if the community died down, and the community WILL die down quickly with online passes, as people who bought the game new get bored of it, and less new players come in as less new copies become available. It's also kind of sad that so many games like this will essentially be useless in the future when servers get shut down, but hey, let's all just live in the present.

I remember when you could buy a game and play it for years. Or buy it long after it had come out, and still have fun with it. Now if you buy a game too late, the community has moved on. Why do devs even put so much work into a game if it's going to be played for a month, then become a ghost town? EA should be trying to figure out how to build communities, not screw the people over that didn't really want the game anyway.

I haven't read anything particularly positive about Syndicate yet, so I agree with others that EA knows the game isn't going to be a hit, and are trying to buck up sales by promoting the lack of an online pass. They probably figure that any positive news will help at this point.

Probably more setting things up so they can point at a nominal drop in earnings vs their projections and shout to the heavens that if only Online pass had been there to save them they wouldn't have had to grind up the developers and their families and to use for jet fuel :P
