SWTOR features Jedi Consular class in new video photo

In order for an MMO to truly succeed, it really needs to cater to as many people as possible. At the core of this idea are the MMO's character classes and their various skill trees. Every person who joins an MMO hopes to see that one magnificent character class that epitomizes everything that person loves to see in a playable character. After seeing the video about Star Wars: The Old Republic's Jedi Consular, I think I finally have that class.

The Jedi Consular seems to be one of the heavy Force-using classes in SWTOR. One of their specializations revolves mainly around defense and healing, including the ability to revive fallen allies. The other specialization is quite different, relying on stealth and huge burst damage to get through a fight.

I suppose the big question here is whether or not this class play any differently than similar classes in other MMOs. If you were selected to be a part of the most recent beta test you'll be able to find out for yourself, but otherwise you'll have to wait until December 20th.

Was thinking about trying the Consular out in the beta tonight, but I keep going back to my Smuggler. The Jedi starting zone is just so dull in my opinion.

I didn't really like it when I played it before. Playing as a Trooper right now, but it looks like I'll be going with Smuggler/Imperial Agent.

Heavy heal/support OR high burst damage? Holy vs Shadow Priest.
But no seriously I'm just angry that I didn't get BootCamp working in time for this beta.

A "good" Sith Inquisitor is pretty much everything I've dreamed of since I was 5.

I just wish they would make KOTOR 3, instead of this.

I don't understand the appeal of ridiculously neutered force powers and over half the population playing as a jedi/sith...

I don't know if it's lack of
polish, but the combat feels disconnected. Maybe it's just lag but every other mmo runs like butter on my rig. Even on WoW expansion release days.

I've been playing the beta. You know how the films were really enjoyable? Yeah, there's not much of that going on in the game. In fact a large part of it seems to be about actively raping your memory of the films. They've only got about eighteen hours of source material and they've used all the memorable bits.

Remember that bit where Luke and Han man the cannons in the Millenium Falcon and take out all those TIE Fighters? Well, there's a cutscene where you watch two charisma-free cyphers do that. Remember how Han Solo had the fastest ship? Well, there's a Bounty Hunter who has the fastest ship too. Remember how Darth Maul had a double-ended lightsabre and did all this really cool jumping about stuff? Well, you can watch someone do that it a cut scene.

The trouble is that when you go to do any of this stuff it's shockingly bad. The animation is remarkably stiff, and you can't get round the fact that rather than having an epic battle and wielding the power of the force to cannily crush your foes, you are repeatedly right-clicking on a badly rendered set of polygons and watching numbers appear, although occasionally you left click on an icon to use a special power, which makes the numbers appear with a different sound effect.

In between that you have forced conversations with NPCs and carrying out objectives that at least ten other people are trying to do at the same time. The first Bounty Hunter mission has you sent to destroy some electronic tower things and hack a shield generator, or something. Except there are at least fifty of these towers and they keep respawning so everyone else can complete the mission too.

So after about four hours of this I just gave up. Maybe it gets better, but I'm too fond of the films to find out.

So Godwhacker is a perfect example of someone who never played Kotor.

Given that the game is an MMO, the Bounty Hunter story that I've been playing was compelling and significantly more engaging than the competition. It's been a long time since I've done a quest in an MMO just to find out what the balls is actually going to happen next.

The betrayals, the wise cracks. The game feels like Star Wars. Specifically though, it feels like KoTOR, where a well equipped bounty hunter can take down a Jedi. Yes, there's button pushing and numbers, but frankly, when those numbers come from you raining death on someone with a goddamn jetpack and rocket launchers, it doesn't seem that bad.

@ Natural 20: I completely disagree. The addition of voice acting by a selection of bored-sounding actors completely ruins it. You can almost hear them turning pages of the script and thinking "Christ, only another 850 pages to go..."

The beta is amazing, if you liked KOTOR you'll love this game, even if for only a month. Don't listen to the haters.

I been playing Beta all week-ends, let me describe the game for you guys;

Terribly boring art style, horrendous and outdated graphic engine. Bland, uninspiring and lifeless environment. Stiff, broken animation and clunky game mechanic. Extremely low resolution texture everywhere, bad optimization. Poor character creation, unoriginal and awkward UI.

Might have been good if released in 2004...might.

I don't know who made this game, but this isn't Bioware. No way in hell. It's a sluggish, broken and unplayable POS.

Oh boys, mark my words, people are in for one big major disappointment. This is going to fail hard.
