Surviving the first two hours of Silent Hill: Downpour photo

One of my fondest memories playing video games is my time with the original Silent Hill. I may be dating myself, but in a time before Skype and other Internet communication tools, the only way to share a video game experience with a friend over a long distance was by picking up a phone, tilting your head at an awkward angle, and hoping that the phone didn't slip.

This is how I played through Konami's survival horror classic and, to be honest, I'm not even sure I would have made it to the credits without the comfort of knowing my buddy was on the other end of the line, cowering through all the same psychological thrills I was.

Silent Hill: Downpour is Konami's latest attempt at reviving the surreal feeling their series was once known for. Let's face it: the franchise has been off its stride with its past iterations, but after getting some hands-on with Downpour I think I might just need to play this one with a friend on the other end of my headset.

Silent Hill: Downpour (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [previewed])
Developer: Vatra
Publisher: Konami
Release: March 6, 2012

Back in early December, I had the chance to play through roughly the first two hours of Downpour. The game opens with a very shocking scenario that hints Murphy Pendelton's character. His past is shrouded in mystery much like the iconic town of Silent Hill, and with that developer Vatra hopes to recreate the nostalgic feeling of past entries. It's a tall order, but if the sheer eeriness that the game evokes -- especially after the first blood curdling cry is heard -- is any indication, Downpour is set to deliver a genuinely fright filled adventure.

"For awhile we've been looking for ways to expand the audience," Tomm Hulett, the senior associate producer, explained to me. "You can't just sell a game to the same X amount of people over and over again."

"On Downpour we wanted to stick more closely to the formula of the old games, and combat is maybe 30 percent of the game and atmosphere and exploring is the other 70 percent," Hulett continued. "You could fight monsters or you could run from them; it's up to you. We really wanted to do that instead of trying to change what Silent Hill was."

After making my way past the intro and most of the E3 demo section, I found myself in the forsaken town of Silent Hill. As I walked the streets, the game began to open up from its mainly linear beginnings. The sense of freedom, as i tried to come to grips with the typical insanity that befalls those who enter the cursed city, really gave me that old explorative feeling that the series had moved away from in Homecoming.

Enemies are as twisted as one would expect, but as in Homecoming, are more easily dealt with than in earlier games thanks to a better balanced fighting system. With a more refined weapon system that limits players to only equipping weapons they can carry, there is a greater sense of urgency to make sure the best weapon is used for whatever traumatic experience rears its ugly little head.

"We did make the combat easier to control and more fun to play," Hulett said. "So when you are fighting creatures it feels better. You don't feel like you are battling the game."

"But keeping your weapons limited, you can't feel empowered,' Hulett added. "You can't feel like you've got a shotgun in your pocket, and a flamethrower, and a knife because then you're not scared. It's important to feel vulnerable and if you screw up that thing is going to kill you. "

The constant threat of being swarmed by mutated monsters and the knowledge that my weapon could break at any time created a feeling of helplessness that has been missing in many recent games in the survival-horror genre as of late.

To compound this, the sense of despair created by the game's dynamic weather system that brings sudden torrential downpours -- hence the games subtitle -- only makes things more chaotic. Water is the game's hook and usually spells trouble for Murphy when it begins to spout out of control: enemies swarm in greater numbers in the rain, and while moving indoors provides temporary protection, it's an unpredictable gambit -- sometimes, what is inside is far worse

Ducking in and out of rundown buildings, creeks in the floor boards, and the bone chilling shrieks that come with the Silent Hill territory finally feel believable thanks to a more cinematic presentation. Environments are more than just empty settings and contain a sense of life that once was, but is now abandoned. There is a lot to see in Silent Hill and thanks to many side quests, players will have a chance to uncover even more about the town's dark past throughout the story.

"The Silent Hill series has always been really story based and... about the characters," Hulett said. "So it's really about bringing that presentation up to the standard people are expecting."

Perhaps this is made most evident by the crazy range of characters I met in my brief travels. While there still is a certain level of Silent Hill camp to be found, each character helps deliver a more vivid world as discussions with them shape the narrative -- offering branching decisions that affect the outcome of the game's multiple endings, Hulett told me. For example, a scene I came to early in my travels presented me with the choice of trying to save someone's life. Would it benefit me to help them, or was this person someone who was going to cause me more trouble later? It was a tough decision.

Story choices aren't the only thing that can alter the path that Murphy ultimately travels. Playstyle plays just as important of a role in determining the grand scheme of things -- so those who tend to be more aggressive will see things unfold differently from the player who tends to run and hide.

My time with Silent Hill: Downpour was quite satisfying. While the genre has evolved considerably since Konami's survival horror franchise was last relevant, the level of exploration that made this series so sacred many years ago appears to be back. I went into Downpour with heavy pessimism, but after a few hours with the game I'm more than excited to see just how twisted Murphy's dark journey through Silent Hill will be.

It had certainly better have improved since the build I played at the Eurogamer Expo in October, which was jaw-droppingly bad in every respect, from combat to camera and generic 'shock' after generic 'shock'.

I refuse to face it. I found them all to have a similar feel and playstyle

SH 1-3 are some of my favorite games of the past. Unfortunately, the downward slide of the series since then has been puzzling then sad. Hopefully this title has some magic to rekindle my love.

The Genre evolved? Bullshit. Since the japanese stopped making Survival Horror Games, Survival Horror died.

Because Western Developer just can't make Horror Games, for reasons I will never understand. Probably because they always have to fit in a bulky marines with more firepower than your run off the mill army... but thats just guessing.

Sorry, but it sounds like those two hours was another slugfest and the rest is depressingly by-the-numbers with its poached psychology ideas. Add to the fact it's being thrown to the wolves with that March release date, and my hopes just sink further down.

Shame, there was a time when I was looking forward to this installment, but these days, not so much.

It's like seeing a great girl from high school after shes battled with drug addiction for a few years. You hope she's managed to get her life together because you can remember the days when she sat on top of the world. You hope, but the benefit of the doubt only becomes important when there is considerable doubt to begin with.

Oh Silent Hill, we could have good times again.

I don't know. Silent Hill never scared you with monsters, or lack of ammo or healing items like resident evil. Silent Hill: Origins was a failure with the number of weapons you get and the fact that they broke down after few hits. Silent Hill is never about the fighting, its the atmosphere and tension.

And that's the reason I think Shattered Memories is the best SH. No weapons at all. Just fear, tension, atmosphere, and a good deal of psychological horror.

I'm glad the combat feels competent. I never bought the reason for shitty combat in the previous games ("we want you to feel like fighting is hard!"), and thought it was just bad design because they didn't want to put the time in to make it better.

Fighting doesn't have to be annoying to make me realize that sometimes running away is the best option.

I loved silent hill 1-3, and controversially Shattered memories, everything else was so far off the mark the developers must have been aiming in the opposite direction. From what I've seen of downpour so far it looks like it has borrowed heavily from alan wake, but that's mainly the visual style and the heavily forested environments demonstrated at e3; not much to go on. I had lost hope for the game but this preview has sparked some interest that will hopefully be justified.

Sounds promising but breakable weaponry? Lame, this brings me back to SH Origins where even the items made from steel (hardest materials in general) shatter into pieces after a few hit XD I hope they gave this a great thought to not recreate the same mistake Origins had...

Even if it doesn't score great with the critics, I will probably buy this. There are far too few survival horror games out there and I can easily look past a few clunky gameplay elements if the developers nail the atmosphere.

I enjoyed Shattered Memories despite the predictable "only in the frozen otherworld" nature of the enemy encounters, and am perfectly fine with Konami trying some new ideas with the series.

Sounds promising.

@kkjjss7 I suppose ideally it would have been better to play the previous one's but they would be very dated now and you wouldn't have the added cushion of nostalgia. I reckon you should just play the game and see if you enjoy it for what it is.

I remain cynical. I am a huge fan of 1-4, 2 being the favorite (just like many other SH fans would say) but I can't see this having that same level of atmosphere and depth that I have found in the older titles. It used to be a game where I could stand back and analyze how the environment and creatures reflected the main character's psyche while having to contend with a nonstop sense of fear and dread. Now it feels like going through a haunted house at a crappy carnival where they attempt to instill fear into people by bombarding them with horror cliches devoid of any meaning (ooooo! look, it's a monster! BOO!)

But it could be good. I really really hope it turns out good. It hurts so much to see one of my favorite game series going down and such a steady rate.

Oh and Silent Hill: Book of Memories... *frustrated sigh*

This seems like an interesting silent hill knock off, I might pass. Otherwise, I'm with Cudgeon on this one. Konkani continues to shit on this franchise. Let it RIP already, and kill the twin stick silent hill shooter. I said never let western devs touch this series but they didn't listen.

I have been so unsure and almost disliked everything I've played/seen of this so far, but as an avid Silent Hill fan I really just live in hope that it somehow turns out to be as good and messed up as the early games, so this preview actually makes me smile. I really hope I like it as the Survival Horror genre really needs a good new game. Screw that, I need a good new scary game!!! Give me the scaries!!

Everyone always brings up Silent Hill 2 as the BEST EVAR, and, while I agree that it's an amazing chapter in the series, I always go back to Silent Hill 3 as my favorite.

SH3 gave more insight to the towns cult background and the evil demons they worshiped, and if Downpour is going to expand on that I am all for it.

"the knowledge that my weapon could break at any time created a feeling of helplessness that has been missing in many recent games in the survival-horror genre as of late"

Just for clarification, is there an indicator of your weapon's condition, or does it surprise you?
Case in point: the weapon condition meter would give you a sense of dread if you know your weapon is going to break soon, and if it breaks before you can get a better weapon, guess what? It's your fault for not finding one fast enough. Dread.
Now, if it's a surprise and your weapons break without notice, you could become really frustrated because you had no way of knowing and now you're screwed. Frustration.
Just my experience from playing games with breakable weapons, especially in horror situations.

I always felt like I knew when a melee weapon was about to break.

So there definetly was a 'panic' to find a replacement in some of the more intense enemy situations.

@vicyoungblood: yourock dude.. thought i was the only one that loved SH Homecoming.. anyone who genuinely saying that it was a bad game (it was a good game) sucks.. silent hill has generally lousy fans. the best version was on the 360 though

i never understood how solid gameplay, control and combat, not to mention dead on SH atmosphere could be hated on so much.. yet these same lousy fans love SH shattered memories.?? one of the suckiest excuses for a SH game ever?? It's kinda understandable why the series is dead now..

@Nephrite Homecoming and 0rigins were collections of cliche's and superficial aspects of the original games- Shattered Memories told a separate, stand-alone story; much truer to the spirit of the series.

Isn't the exact reasoning Konami pulled for firing Team Silent, leaving the series on life support since?

I'm pretty sure "expanding the audience" has killed more series this generation than revived.

The first game was and will always be the best silent hill ever, it was trully terrifying that you couldn't really know what was true or false(Was harry dreaming? Was he awake?).
Anywho i am really excited to see how this one will come out(even if it's not made by those crazy nihonjins) because it really looks like focused in the original premise, even if i don't think battling with controllers is a bad thing since fighting IS hard @DinnertimeNinja and gives more tension to the game.
Ppl here are whining how lame it is for having less weapons or the fact that they break, but it just look like momma boy's bull to me.

I must admit, I'm similarly intrigued.

I liked Silent Hill up to #3, but it was obviously losing it's way by then. The move to making the games predominantly combat related was a terrible move, in my opinion.

But, it certainly sounds as if these new guys can talk the talk. Now all that remains to be seen is if they can walk the walk.

As long as they keep in mind the original vision of the game, I shall continue to be optimistic.

I'm still not entirely convinced by anything Vatra says. I don't really want 'fun' combat and I'm weary of the multiple choice system they're talking about. I hope it doesn't boil down to "press X to be a human being and B to be an irrational cunt".
